What to keep from old PC

Found an old PC outside someone's house left for trash. Looked decent so I grabbed it. Didn't test anything yet but wondering if anything is worth reusing for a build I'm going to be doing for a friend. 

It's in an Antec Nine Hundred, with a Q9550, ASUS P5E mobo, PNY GT610, 12GB of DDR2 RAM and some ASUS soundcard.

What really interested me though is the PSU, an Antec EarthWatts Green 650W, a Tier 4, which is good enough for the build my friend wants (R5 1600 + some random GPU, probably the 610 if it works. Just need display no gaming.)

 

So, what can I keep? Is the CPU relevant for non-gaming tasks? Can I OC on that board?

PSU is definitely worth keeping around. I would personally look at just using it as a thin HTPC client.

Keep the CPU and motherboard and RAM. You could use it in a server if you wanted to.

HTPC, NAS( might consume too much power), retro gaming box.

Might do the HTPC but then I'd probably get some other cheap GPU for my friend's rig as technically he found it so if he wants any of the parts he gets preference. I do however have a really old Dell PC somewhere so I could steal its PSU

I'd keep all of it except the GPU.

Buy a used 660ti, 500GB HDD, then sell it on for $200 or so

you throw a 660Ti or even a 680 in there and a SSD and you'll have a fairly fun gaming PC, yeah forget Ultra but you'll still be able to game. 

 

Scored a nice bargin there provided it all works. Don't forget to stress test it, could be soon as it needs more power it BSOD or many possible issues, if it passed well played sir.

I mean I have more cores and probably RAM but overall perf still better on urs althoguth with a 660ti mine would win in games lmao

meh, it's primarily for movies and streaming, some light gaming for my son, if I was really worried about the graphics I saw a gtx 960 on craigslist for $60 a couple days ago, but the 6850 is doing everything I ask of it
