What DX does Doom 2016 use

Billy_Mays

I have a power problem which is an easy fix but it's going to be a little bit before I can play games a lot more better due to me not having a high enough wattage PSU but my mobo has a Igpu and it's a ATI Radeon HD 4250 512mb VRAM in it would I be able to play doom or no

I believe it uses DX11, DX12, and Vulkan API's. Not too sure if it comes with DX9 or others.

You can get the free trial now and borrow him your 770 to try the game.

Also, Doom 2016 doesn't use DX. It uses Vulkan and OpenGL if I recall correctly.

Under volt the CPU and GPU, a 450w pay should be able to handle it.

I know but it will be annoying to swap the GPUs and I'm pretty sure his 980 use a 6 and 8 pin not a 8 and 8

This is correct. OpenGL or Vulkan, DirectX is not an option.

I don't know if there's any technical constraint that will stop Doom from running on an integrated Radeon HD 4250, but it is leagues below the official minimum requirements. There's no way it would run at a playable framerate, if it does at all.

I'm going to try with Vulkan today and report back if it's playable

I confess I'm not sure what that message is specifically saying the error was. This video hardware is firmly in "don't even bother" territory if you ask me (it's effectively more than 3 generations older than the minimum required), and I can't even find any documentation proving it supports the proper version of OpenGL. That may be the problem.

If you want to try something, go to users\%username%\saved games\id software\doom\base\, find DOOMconfig.local, open it in Notepad. Find the line r_renderAPI, and if it's set to "0" try "1." If it's set to "1" try "0." Basically this switches from OpenGL (0) to Vulkan (1) outside the game. I'll be honest, I have no idea what this will do. It should do something, but it may only be a slightly different error message. :P

Doom 2016 is OpenGL and Vulkan. It doesn't use DirectX at all. And Vulkan isn't compatible with anything before GCN (https://www.amd.com/en-us/innovations/software-technologies/technologies-gaming/vulkan#)

OpenGL may also still be spotty on AMD cards. ATI/AMD traditionally performed worse than NVIDIA on that front.
