Do I upgrade?

So I built a computer 2 summers ago (when ram prices were cheap lol) and i chose (mistakenly) a i5 6400-t, that still gets the job done.  My question to you is: Should i sell my old i5, mobo, cooler and ram combo for ~$350 usd and get a ryzen r5 1600 system?

ps: when i bought my ram in 2016, it literally cost me $26, but now the ram is $57, so should i exclude that from selling because of jank prices?

If you can actually sell your old hardware for that price I'd definitely go for it, $18 to upgrade to a 1600 is a no brainer.

Depends what you do with your PC, but for gaming you wouldnt see that much of a performance gain (not enough to make it worthwhile anyway), perhaps if streaming/rendering it would be.

You can't look at past prices you've paid. They're irrelevant. Look at current prices when pricing what you have.

If you want to keep the RAM, make sure that it's compatible with the motherboard

I'd do it. You'll get better performance.

Not entirely true. You get massively improved lower frame rates, and pretty significant gains at 1080p on a majority of titles.

I'n not saying there would be no gain, just not enough to warrant an upgrade.

A 1600 compared to an I5 at runs under 3ghz even at its boost? Yes, it would be a huge upgrade.

Dont see how it would be, only really worth it for me if OP were to sell their old hardware to recoup some of the cost.

Believe it or not, locked 7700 is only slightly cheaper than unlocked 7700k because it is the target of many buyers without Z mobo.

Could i try and sell the parts for >$300 because of ram/motherboard/cpu prices increasing from my time of purchase and get a 370 motherboard or would that not matter with a 1600?

Yeah but its a) not conventional and b) i would be spending much more than I sell the components for, for example, if i sell 4 of my pc components and CAN EVEN AFFORD a locked 7700, I have absolutely nothing to run it on (DUH)

You can use your B150, just update the BIOS and it will work fine. Dont know where you are buying from, but it should only be around $300 or so for one which is less tha your Ryzen build ($305 on Newegg now).

A 7700 costs as much as the whole 1600 platform plus OP is selling less things meaning that it would cost quite a bit more in the end.

Sadly, your 6400t is even worse than a G4560 (<$80) in games due to its low clock speed, $50 for that

Cooler: Maybe $8? It won't lose much value because there aren't much value to lose anyway

Mobo: Cheapest brand new B250 boards sell for less than $70 now. I don't know how the heck someone can sell your board for $200. I'll give it $50

RAM: $40. This doesn't lose much value.

You can't even do math correctly. Ryzen with mobo and ram cost just as much as a 7700 alone, but OP get much less from selling old stuff.

Op doesnt need to sell anything, can keep already owned ram and motherboard. They may sell their CPU if they wish.

But...thing is, its only like a $25-30 difference between a whole 1600 platform (B350 mobo) and a 7700 by itself. OP would get to sell the chip plus motherboard plus RAM for the 1600 which will get him  more than just selling the chip itself plus if OP didn't sell his current RAM, a 1600 build would cost $25-30~ (depends on the RAM pricing) cheaper soooo yeah? 

 

Plus, you can OC a 1600 with its stock cooler (very comfortably) which will help to negate the performance difference in ryzen vs sky/kabylake so...yeah

I don't think you'll get quite that much money for your components, but you can always try selling it on eBay. People always overpay for computer stuff on there.

I'd go with a B series board, most people have found little to no difference between the two. However, I find X series boards do look better, if that matters at all to you.

You can't look at it like that. From a gaming perspective, sure, but he'll get more than that for the CPU.

He could probably easily get about $250+ for his combo.

su The point of going used is to get products that are better in price to performance ratio. I dont think a usrd 6400t bundle will sell at all if a brand new g4560 bundle (around $200) costs less

Its more like $50 difference or so (Perhaps more depending where you get it from and extra shipping cost for the other parts). Sill inclined to get a 7700 and spend slightly more after selling the CPU to get a little more performance.
