Are these Sata adapters safe?

Funtoink63

Hello,

few days ago I found a Sata extension that goes into PCIE bracket and I was like: This is amazing!!! And then I found Reddit thread filled with pictures of melted Molex to 2x Sata Y cables. One of the comment was: Best way to destroy your drive. And Google seems to be filled with links that say "Molex to Sata nearly set computer on fire"...

So I'm wondering, are these Molex to Sata cables that bad? Does this apply to some other adapters like Sata Y cable?

Should be fine, not a lot of current goes through those things. Unless it's extremely shoddy quality and the wires short out it will be safe to use.

I feel a lot more comfortable with these compared to those janky molex to pcie 8 pin power connectors....

Just buy from a trusted brand, maybe something on Amazon with enough positive reviews.

Does you mum know you're here?

Pretty much any cheap cables from china (which is what most of those are) will be a risk of catching fire.

The best thing to do is not use adapters, get a proper good quality PSU that has all the connectors you need.

there are videos on youtube that demonstrate failed ones. the ones where the wires go into a moulded case are bad. The ones where the calbles are spliced or mechanically inserted into a pre-molded case are better.

Reason why I'm asking is that I have old Core 2 Duo computer that is taking space and I want to get rid of it. Power supply has only one dedicated Sata connector, one cable with two Molex, and one cable with Molex and then Sata (without orange wire) coming from it. And I didn't know whether it would be safe to use it or not. And I want to prepare it the way that whoever is going to buy it can throw in SSD or second drive (if ever wanted to) Does this apply to these? (or cable extension?)41rHdgZPXcL._SL500_AC_SS350_.jpg

If you care about your computer then buy a good quality PSU that won't light your house on fire.

as long as the cable that passes power has a good conductor diameter (cables can look thick but the actual wire could be too small).
