how to choose a mountain bike? like a good, solid mountain bike?

Plus it looks kinda abused.

It does, but as long as the frame had no cracks, it'd be a good bike. I'd be more worried about the shock locking from sitting so long (do bike shocks do that? it seems like they would), and the old-fashioned geometry.

It's a bike from around 2006 (Spec Wise) so I would say it's possible the suspension is all messed up.

Oh, and if you like going fast, get a good full face helmet (I've got a Bell Super 2R, which can be a normal helmet or a full face, the chin bar snaps on and off). This is something your parents could probs help you with, since they're expensive ($150-$200), but will keep you from getting a concussion or losing teeth or something.

You are if you did a black diamond run with a rigid bike! (and aren't you the one who wanted to make a rocket? This wouldn't have anything to do with your bike, would it? )

Thus why it's called the Super 2R. And it is. It's crazy light and well ventilated, especially with the chin bar off. and it comes in my favorite color (black and lime green) and matches my lime green Smith Squad goggles (also excellent) perfectly.

They're easier to flip and spin around.

That's one of the trial of having such an awesome cassette. And you seem to have a very nice bike. Mine is all muddy and sitting dejectedly in the garage with a flat tire. I changed the tube, pumped it up, and it was flat again. My car tire is pretty much dead, but I don't want to spend the $50 -$70 to get a new tire.

so its worth investing in a full suspension bike? and would a nice hardtail or a bad full suspension bike be better, like something off of craigslist?

Depends on your riding style, the one I use for Competitions is only Front-Suspension. but a very good one.

Hardtails are simpler, tougher, cheaper, and can look really nice.

FS bikes are smoother, and take big hits and small chatter without losing composure, and can look nice or weird, depending on how the designers made them.

Bottom line is, if you like it raw and don't mind a sore bum, get a hardtail. The front fork (if you get a proper one that can be tuned) will keep your front wheel tracking well, and then you can let the back to whatever it wants, and have an awesome, riots ride down the hill.

If you want to feel faster, smoother, don't want a sore bum, and want to look cooler, get an FS bike. They're also much better for big bumpy trails, since they won't lose their grip like a hardtail.

See my big speel above. Hardtails can be more fun, but harder on your tail. FS bikes can also be fun and can handle pretty much everything (I'm meaning Enduro/Trail bikes, not Cross-Country bikes), but are more expensive. Under $1500 or so, I wouldn't recommend an FS bike.
