I set them so they should stop spinning when i'm not using them after like 5 minutes but they don't *always* stop just sometimes.

Ironically just as i'm writing this they did stop but i'm still gonna ask this just in case.

And they are running again.

It's better to leave them running than to have them spin up and down multiple times a day.

Sure but now that i have 2 they can become pretty loud and they make my desk (resonate? vibrate? Not sure which would be the right word here) as well

Get something to vibration isolate them instead of just mounting them with screws in your drive cage.

this, and you could get rubber pads for the feet of your PC case.

Well they shouldn't be vibrating your desk unless the disks are actually reading or writing.

That's why i'm confused. I have an SSD that's running every program and windows so they shouldn't spin up at all.

I have games and downloads on one of them and backups on the other.

But they are randomly spinning up even tho i'm not using them.

@Megah3rtz @Enderman @NinJake Do you guys know if i should tighten the screws on the HDD brackets or maybe loosen them a little?

I have them fully tightened at the moment.

Reduces life span.

@Enderman I doubt that it reduces it by a huge amount since it's a feature in windows.

Just in case i'll put them on 10 minutes instead of 1 hehe

The lifespan is reduced both by running and by spinning up and down.

The reason it's a feature is because it is better for the lifespan to spin down when it will not be used for a long period of time, such as several hours or days.

It is NOT better to have it spin up and down every few minutes that it needs to access something because that causes more wear than simply leaving it running.

This is like with cars, it's not fuel efficient to start and stop the engine every few seconds, but if you're stopped for like 30 seconds at a stop light, it does take less gas to stop the engine and then start it up later.

@Enderman I see

Well i guess the only solution is to sell my organs and buy two 1Tb SSDs...

850 evoes aren't that expensive :)

You'll also make some money back if you sell your HDDs, like maybe 50 bucks or something.

If i sold both i'd get around 103 bucks but idk i would't trust myself enough to buy a 1Tb SSD for games and stuff. it would probably die pretty fast.

A good quality SSD like an 850 evo will not die anytime soon, at least not before you do :P

They last way more than 5 years.

You can put games and OSes and servers on it no problem.

I just assumed because they have a 5 year warranty.

Usually when the warranty runs out products die.

Nop, it will die when it runs out of writes, which will typically be longer than you will live.

It is a piece of electronics though, so sometimes those just die due to long life, at like 10, 20 years or more depending on conditions.

It will still outlive pretty much any HDD, so don't worry about it.

Also they are more resistant to power surges :)

@Enderman I'd be extremely happy if my SSD lived for more than 10 years because that sounds amazing.

Guess i'm just too worried about expensive products.

How long do HDDs last though?

My old seagate HDD started having some SMART errors after a couple years.

I had a WD blue that lasted 5 years before it was killed by a power surge.

My SSD survived the power surge.

I have also seen other people online who had a power surge/PSU failure and all their HDDs died but the SSDs survived.

I would say a typical consumer HDD would last about 5-10 years, with datacenter grade HDDs lasting 10+.

@Enderman I currently have two WD10EZEX 1Tb in my system.

Basically everyone has suggested these so i got them.

Haven't had any problems with them yet *Knocks on wood*

I just don't like that they are noisy. When they turn off the system becomes sooo nice and quiet.

Yeah, it's only a good idea to spin them down if they're gonna be unused for a few hours or so.
