My mom tried to apply for a job at Starbucks and an email arrived. There was a link that led to what seemed like a job application site. It wasn't. It asked for credit card number and her social security number.

My dad found out it was a scam and was pissed. I was too. My dad started demanding answers whether she gave any information away. She said that she stopped midway, and that she "didn't" give any information away in the process. Then she started victimizing herself, telling my dad that it wasn't her fault. After that, my dad calmed down and lectured her about scams and what's real and not.

I was still a bit skeptical, so I blatantly took her phone, where she tried to apply, and investigated the link which lead to the scam.

I looked at it and saw there was 3 options, asking for what job to apply for, and below it stated 'submit'.

If the page said 'submit', then doesn't that mean she did fill out everything else, except for the last task? Each task( filling out credit card and social security, etc) seemed like they were set in different tabs....so doesn't that mean she did submit all of her personal information?

yeah if they were each in their own tab than its very possible they have your data as they will cache each side and its info while loading the next page.

i think everybody needs to chill the fuck out and not completely just go off on your mom..

educate her so she learns in the future, not go off on a fucking tirade.

if she didnt know, then she didnt know.

sounds like people have some major fucking anger issues they need worked out before you start worrying about whether you lost credit card info.

if its a concern, cancel the card and move on with life.

Lol your dad seems like a good guy

If she didn't know there is no reason to be upset with her. That's like you going to the store, buying a pack of cards that say Pokemon, but when. You open it it's webkinz cards. Not your fault for it being the wrong cards is it?

Probably going to scare her more by saying her identy could be stolen.

Even if it is you can clear it up. Happend to my brother. Was not hard to fix at all.

get her to call the bank and cancel the card and have a new one sent with a new number. depending on how smart the scamers are, they may have had a keylogger on the site so she wouldn't even need to hit submit for them to obtain the information. no idea what you can do about the SSN/citizen-barcode since thats not a thing in australia

Probably would have to contact/go to a social security office (social security administration) that can issue/re-issue SSN's.
Honestly in the US, I think if we keep this trend of using something that was not designed to be a form of identification that we need to reform that and actually commit to having a national ID number. Or give state issued IDs more value and security features to prevent fraudulent documents.

I think your father over reacted, but at the same time he was correct to be upset; just not to take it out on your mother.

That being said i do believe that the scammers in question likely have your mothers information.

Here is my advice. Have the card cancelled and a new one re-issued.  Then call the credit bureaus and have them issue a fraud alert on her SSN; which will hinder people trying to steal her identity.

Lastly report the scammers using the link below.

The card isn't much of an issue, but the SSN is.  Identity theft can wreak havoc if left unchecked and can be years before it gets sorted out.

Starbucks randomly emails people for their potential employee's?

Interesting

Sounds like your mom needs to take an awareness course.

Simple common sense is needed.

Do not do shit that is asked of you over the internet or emails.

Simple as that.

If a "Bank" emails you, its a scam, banks just dont do that.

Major corporations like Starbucks dont send out mass emails for job openings.

You see a job opening on a job search website, be sure the job search website is legit.

Get details on the company hiring.

Go to their physical address.

very true, but they had a good warning. which means if they actually want to fix it now before it becomes a problem, it'll only take a couple weeks, if that, to prevent any damage.

I've told my dad, but he said not to worry about it. Wtf?

But this is just an assumption....I don't know if it's correct or not. Nothing over the top happened at all.. How long does it take to figure out something's wrong?

But I still feel suspicious...

What information did she actually type in?

The complete SSN, or just a partial?

A complete credit card number?

Any personal info (name/address, etc)?

It certainly means two things:

1) I'm glad not to be her, or a member of that family more generally

2) You're probably glad not to be my son/daughter.

Don't know much about the link but it may be safe since she never hit submit. So its a very simple site I guess. Unless these guys do a living out of it, but I doubt they're any smart enough to do such things. Reminds me of one of those fake virus pop-ups....

Yeah you get them every now and then. Quite rare for me.

They try to trick you.

All they need for mass electronics shit, is a 0.01% foolery rate.
