I was wondering about how well the CX450M would hold up with a gtx 980, 7600k machine. Specifically overclocked at a constant 400w load. This stupid mining craze is pretty much forcing my friend to wait at least another month for a 1060 or bid on a 980 now.

The cxm 450 are very OK PSU's.

You could probably run at full load and wouldn't kill it any faster than half.

That said, The worst that can happen is the psu gives out(cant provice enough power) and the system crashes. He'll need to return it and get a 550 watt PSU.

I don't know if I'd quite risk it for a prolonged period of time on a CX450M, I'll be honest. I think newer revisions come with some decent safeguards, but a lot of the margin people have for wattage is for thermals as well. That being said, a 980, even with 2GB less VRAM is quite a decent bit faster than a 1060, so it's not a bad buy at any rate. So if your buddy is in a hurry, and doesn't have much use for the extra VRAM, it's not a bad thing if he can find the 980 cheap.

That being said, I don't wanna be that guy, but in these cases I always squeeze in a disclaimer about not taking PSU choice lightly. It's not just about adequate wattage.

EDIT: It just dawned on me, does the CX450M even come with an adequate number of connectors? Depending on the 980, it could be 1x8-pin + 1x6-pin or 2x8-pin. If the PSU doesn't have the adequate connectors, I definitely would stay away from anything that would require you to use some janky molex to 8-pin adapter. You really have to make sure.

many of the lower tier model 980's have 2x6 pin so I was just wondering if many people has enough experience with the cxm models to give a good opinion. I figure it will be enough myself, but I wanted to hear other opinions.

Well, everyone gave a tentative "it should work" more or less. At peak system load with a setup like that you'd see much less than you'd think, especially at stock. Just depends on the version of 980 and the connector combo. Even the reference card is 1x8 and 1x6. The only version I can remember coming with 2x6-pin connectors was the EVGA SC one IIRC, but yeah I guess there could be more.

That was the exact one that I'm trying to get him to bid on. A 980 with 2x6 pin seems perfect for him. Now just to get him to return that 7600k and buy a used 6700k instead.

I wouldn't personally pair a 450W PSU with a 980 but it's not like a 7600K and 980 will be breaching 400W so you'll be fine. The CX450M is a good unit too.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.
