1440p Really Worth it?

SacredChili

Okay so im planning to buy a few things and am wondering if 1440p is really worth it over 1080p for playing games and general use. Also if it is that much better would a 280x be able to handle a 1440p display with most settings on high in most games?

Edit: Also If I did go 1080p i would probly get a higher end gpu like a gtx 780 or the soon to come non reference 290's.

Yes, it's worth it. Once you go high-res you never go back. (Unless you are doing triple 1080p)

I upgraded to a pb278q 1440p half a year ago. Image quality on 1080p when im used to high-res, really looks bad imo.

edit: oh and about that 280x, yes you should be able to handle it. I currently run 670 on 1440p at high settings in bf4

Sweet that was actually the monitor I was planning to buy. I wanted to get the R9 290 non reference with it but i can't justify spending that much money... especially since i dont even know how much the 290's are gonna cost..

Think about it this way...Console devs could drop res to have games play at 60fps, but they keep the highest res with a 30 fps rate. Resolution is quality, framerate = performance. You decide what's important.

IMO 1440p is worth it, however you need to be prepared to stay on the upper end of graphics cards to maintain adequate frame rates or be willing to drop you settings. Although I have a feeling anyone who goes 1440p is going for the image quality and dropping settings would be unacceptable.

I thing 1440p is worth it but really hard to see the difference until you spend a lot time in front one then try and to use 1080p again. You should really try to get a 290 or 780. I can also recommend the asus PB278Q.

Is it worth it?

Depends on your situation.

If money isn't much of a problem, sure.

If space constraints for multiple displays and productivity of multiple cheaper 1080p displays are more appealing, maybe 1440p isn't for you. 1440p isn't exactly cheap atm.

I had a 1440p (the auria from microcenter) for a short time, but my desk was too shallow and my laptop couldn't run it at the time, so I returned it. I will be buying a new one this friday, and in my opinion it's definitely worth it. Not only is the monitor physically bigger, the massive amount of pixels lets you have so much more room to work. I loved mine, and now with an actual computer, I can't wait.

I can also recommend the PB278Q. It was a lot of money but I never looked back.

If you have a high end system then the 1440 will really do it justice.

Anyway: IMO 1440p is the way to go as 1080p is becoming "to" mainstream and 4K is still the future. So go for 1440p for the best balance between performance and image quality :)

Hey hey, if i want to stay at 60 fps i have to play at medium. But it's totally playable at high settings. :D

There needs to be a 2560x1600 monitor that does not cost an arm and a leg like the Dell one. The whole 1440p wave is the reason i refuse to buy a high res monitor. 16:10 is closer to the golden ration than 16:9 so it is better. Really though the perfect ratio would be 16:10.11271243 or 2560x1618(this is rounded down, the actual res is 1618.033989)

Honestly why not wait? 1440p is not a mainstream resolution since only hardcore PC users even care. This means that they are a lot more expensive to produce, because they will not sell as well as a 1080p one. That will change however with 4k hitting mainstream soon. I know it is weird when you think about it, but if things go the way they currently are soon 4K displays will be less expensive than 1440p ones.

Just my thoughts, I'm not upgrading until I can get 4k, good panel and g-sync for a reasonable price ^^

If you want high res now though a 1440p monitor is probably a great option
