You bring a good point. That was my bad, I would be using this for my nas/file server/backup storage. I figured instead on buying a motherboard, and then getting a LSI raid card in IT mode, this would make more sense. I would actually use 11 of the 12 sata ports.

I haven't heard that many people have lots of problems with them. I will take your advice into consideration.

What OS? This board isn't the happyies in non windows non linux OS's due to the third party controllers, id probably just get a normal lga 1151 system

Instructions for frustration management:

1) Sit at desk.   2) Repeatedly slam forehead against desk.

I never said I was smart, just smart enough to be dangerous.

Use case ?

the cpu is good for the price. And spacailie for a router/PFS/NAS setup. (8 real cores and not 4/8 C/T. just sad it das not have 8/16) But than again, the memory can be a real B*tch on this generation. If you go for it. i'll think the best case is to par it with cheap Hynix memory and pray to the PCMR.

An 8 core Atom.  I didn't know those were a thing.  12 Sata Ports, 4 RAM slots, and the PCI-E slot is pre-cut to allow 16X cards even if it electrically couldn't do that many lanes.  That'd be neat to play around with just for the sake of curiosity.

That said, even if people were well versed in the hardware, without knowing HOW you wanted to use the hardware, 'worth buying' isn't something someone could answer.  There's a lot of jobs that board could do there's lots more it could never do.

what the full build, budget and use?

Starting off will be a CS550 watt 80 plus gold psu, a pentium G3240, four barracuda 1tb drives in raid 10, OMV of coarse. In the end I plan on having eight drives in raid 10 and two in raid 0 for quick write speed. All of this housed in a Fractal Design node 804.

I have purchase the node 804, the psu, two out of the four drives, a motherboard (but I am looking at the asrock itx board), and the pentium G3240.

Like I had mentioned earlier, this will be used to hold files, hold backups, and to and fill other small roles as they come in.

These systems are very popular with FreeNAS, since it's a low power CPU that has quite a few CPU cores, and TONS of onboard SATA ports.

I was originally intending to build a FreeNAS box using one of these, but the prices in Canada for a new one are a bit steep.

For Sale: Meraki Bundle

Yeah, it'd looks like a neat board to tool around with, but at $160 USD, you could just get a cheapo Celeron and cram some cheap PCI-E controllers on it to get the same result.

Agreed - I would only get one to play around with. But I ended up getting a Dell T410 server w/ a 12-bay SAS expander for free when we got new servers at work, so I don't really need anymore server hardware right now lol

I really want to get around to using the Socket G2 (Mobile/Laptop Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge Socket) ITX mobo I got on eBay like a year ago, but my i7 2630QM laptop refuses to die so there's no donor parts yet.  I'm super interested to see how a low power hyperthreaded mobile CPU can do paired with a full fat GPU, and built into a Silverstone Raven RVZ01 or something for a 'Used Parts Compact HTPC' but the time has not come yet. :(

Could be a good HTPC Gaming Machine w/ a super slim case. How slim is the RVZ01? I just googled it, and it looks a bit too "gamer angles" aesthetic for my taste lol but I've seen worse.

I'm not dead set on it, but I want something 'console like' in design.  I'm somewhat partial though to the RVZ01-E since that variant just baaaarely allows you to cram in a full ATX PSU, which would allow me to recycle a CX600 I have sitting around too.

Id use raid 5/6 over 10. raid 5/6 is normally faster with sequentical reads/writes and you get more space.

Id also look into freenas as it has zfs which is better at keeping your data safe with checksumming.

Yikes, cable managing that PSU will be fun xD Too bad you didn't have the Modular variant instead - would make it less cramped.

I personally would like to see a case that follows a similar aesthetic as the XBOX One - which I quite like the look of. Though I'm not partial to the white XBOX One S that I own.

I wanted a little more redundancy, plus raid 6 takes a long time to recover.

The problem with zfs is I can not expand the volume it like I can with OMV.

You can expand zfs with a anouther vdev, but yea its harder to just add a drive.

You don't need more redunancy here, the chance of 2 drives failing is very low. You need backups, they will keep your data safe. Raid won't help you if you delete a file, get a cryptolocker, the file system get corrupted, or the system burns down.

Agreed on your second point - the point of RAID is simply ease of getting the system back up and running, not actually protecting the files. That's what backups are for. RAID is just to make it easy in case a drive dies on you.

That is where I liked OMV

Raid 6 is very good at keeping data safe, the rebuilding time is much better on 10 than 6 or even 5. However, 5 still isn't too bad. Raid wise I am willing to bend, but the os eh... not so much.

I will keep backups of my backups, I know one solution isn't the end all, having an offsite is always best. You are right, backups of your backups are important.

Avaton are a rebranded atom chip. The chip on that board is in that series.
