What do you consider "Stealing"

yathis

I "obtain" power all the time, from convenience stores, the city, gas stations, schools, libraries, rec centers, malls and so on.

The power outlets are accessed out in the open. I do buy stuff from the stores I get power from, if I can.

On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being stealing a car and 1 being torrenting Metallica tunes or taking a few too many ketchup packets from Arby's........

Where is does my power come in to play?

I usually just borrow things without permission for unspecified amount of time and also usually just from the WWW.

No one blinks an eye.

But I find it odd how many places do not have power outlets.

Inside Subway, can only use the outlet next to the pop machine/coffee machine.

Inside/Outside of McDonalds

I can usually find one outside a gas station

Strip malls are 50/50

I pull about 1200W out of them so :)

only using under 8A

I need something like 2000W at 8A though. More pricey!!!!!

Taking something that isn't yours or offered to you, duh.

Condiments (fast food packets) are out as an offering to take what you need, a ketchup bottle at a market is not.

What are you doing to "steal" power?  Like charge your phone?  Portable battery packs?  Something else?

Just curious.

So would you consider what op is doing with power from places stealing?  Or not stealing?

If it were for employees you wouldn't have access to them

True enough

I want to pull no more then 9 or 10A from the wall at 2500W, and pump in 30 or 40A into my batteries.

I would be set.

It's stealing, but in a harmless way. Places like malls not so much so they can have charging stations--but cell phones and vehicles are different haha. If you purchase something at that business, it balances itself out I think.

A motorcycle (I assume that's what motorbike is) might take a lot to balance out.  lol

one kwh is what, like 15 cents?

tbh i'd be more concerned with your ass loitering or tripping breakers unintentionally than the cost of power

Speaking as someone who works at a Library, using our outlets inside, in publicly accessible areas is 100% totally fine. In fact, that's why they are there.

However, don't go into areas you shouldn't (Some back room, staff area, etc), and try not to use outlets outside.

Schools, malls, and rec centres? Same thing - if it's a publicly accessible area - go nuts. Most malls even have free "charging stations" with various USB cables.

However, at a store, I would ask permission first. You probably won't get in any legal trouble, but they might kick you out or ban you from entering, if caught.

Most places, no they aren't. They're reserved for store owned electronics. Displays, signs, vending machines, etc.

That said, the managers and most employees don't care if you use an available outlet so long as you aren't obstructing business.

You work at a library?    As a librarian or something else?  Career or just where you are now?

I just completed my MLIS degree about a month and a half ago so hopefully before too long I'll be able to find a library job too.

I work in IT - though at this point I've been working at a library for the past 3 years now, doing support/sysadmin, etc.

I have no desire to become a librarian :P I see what it's like dealing with the public every day lol

Library IT is still cool.  ?

Are library patrons mean where you live?  ?

That's why I think I'd like to focus on children's library stuff if I'd have the chance.  To help children develop a love of books at an early age would be great.  It's a very nice age for reading because they're more likely to be able to read for personal enjoyment rather than random arbitrary topics for school assignments.

Most of our patrons (Now referred to as "Members" lol) are pretty good. But we get the occasional nuisance and mean person, and plenty of lower income folks or homeless/unemployed people, but most of them don't bother anyone and are nice enough.

I would define it as taking something or using a service that's not entitled to you. Using electrical outlets as a place of business is not necessarily a huge deal as long as they allow you to. If it's open and next to a table, or near a table, then it's probably free to use. I would expect places of businesses to hide outlets they don't want people using. But many companies are acknowledging that people are using portable computers and phones more often, and so I imagine they expect people to want them, and therefore provide them to customers for use.

If you are connecting a line to your neighbor's house, or hacking into their network, and taking their electricity, Internet connection bandwidth, or both, yeah that's stealing. If there's an agreement, fine, but otherwise it's stealing.

I personally do not like using outlets at my workplace because it's not my electricity, and I'm not using it for work purposes. Besides, I can charge my phone in my automobile.
