Switching e-mail providers; how best to go about it?

So I am switching from hotmail (outlook) to gmail, and I already started changing my e-mail on all of my accounts and stuff but still have more to do.  I was wondering if I should put an auto-response on my old e-mail to let people know that I have a new one, but then I get a TON of spam e-mails from craigslist bots and other bullcrap, so if I put an auto-response, are some of those bots going to redirect their junk to my new e-mail?  How do I go about this?

How about just do a auto response that says to contact your phone but do not leave any details. If it's a real person and they know you then they should have your number

Whenever I get emails on my gmail that I think I need, I get to that account and move it to my new one.

If it's an ad, I unsubscribe and ignore it. Most things are ads.

I would do a blanket announcement to your important contacts first. Then create a filter so if anything comes from them to auto forward it to your new address, just in case.

You may want to check in the old address once in a while though. I'm sure after about a year though, you can completely abandon it.

Just be careful with some of those. Some spammers use the link to verify the account is active and send you more spam
