Do 140mm fans make much difference vs 120mm in terms of airflow, cooling ability, and noise?

I've currently got Corsair ML120 fans in my main desktop.  2 in the front for intake and 1 in the back for exhaust.  

 

I'm planning to replace the 2 intake fans with Corsair ML140 fans in hopes that they'll cool better and be quieter but I'm curious how much of a difference the new fans will make.  

 

Edit: For those wondering why I didn't just get the ML140 fans in the first place my old case only supported 120mm fans in front so it hadn't occured to me that other mid-tower cases might allow for either 120mm or 140mm fans to be used in the front mounts.  So I had bought ML120 fans for the front of my new case not realizing until after I put them in that I could've gotten 140mm fans.  ?

Larger fans are quieter but from 120mm to 140mm it's not the largest difference

Just keeping this here as a It doesn't have to be an epicly large difference.  Just hopefully enough to be quieter and yet still cool better enough that I could run my GPU fans a little slower.

NZXT FX-142 (RF-FX142-NP) -> using them on my radiator.

 

Room temp 27°C, idle 35-40°C.

 

5820K 4Ghz.

 

Super silent. They're currently running at 900 rpm. Same speed as my case fans, while more silent are displacing more air.

 

Under 100% CPU load, still super quiet running at 1100 rpm (they can go to 2000).With temps of 60-65 °C.

You should be able to see the fan speed with software like HWMonitor.

It's the one on my profile.  

 

Edit: I just restarted to adjust the fan curves for my case fans.  Two of the fans both showed a temperature reading of 49C but what's weird is one fan was showing at around 1700rpm while the other was around 1400rpm.  

 

Both are set to an identical fan curve though.  

 

I assume they're the two front fans if the temperature reading is the same for both fans.

The temperature reading is either for the cpu or the motherboard and not the fans. What headers are the fans plugged into?

The 3 case fans are plugged into the 3 motherboard fan headers.  The rear exhaust fan to sys fan 1 while the front 2 fans are sys fan 2 and sys fan 3.

Gigabyte's fan control isn't that great for recent boards. Are you using SIV?

I thought it used to be.  I could be imagining things but I swear the fans started sounding different (possibly running at higher speeds?) after a bios update a few months ago.

Gigabyte's software for fan control is called SIV or System Information Viewer.

The sys_fan headers on the Z170X Gaming 7 don't support 4pin pwm and is probably why you can't get the fans to run slow enough. You should be using the cpu_fan header instead which does support 4pin pwm. If you don't already have one, getting a 4pin pwm splitter or hub would help.

Yes, they have 4pin headers but they don't have a pwm signal on the 4th pin. Fan headers can be wired differently and vary between different boards.

Just to clarify, there are different types of pwm and 4pin pwm is one of them. Another form of pwm control is one that pulses the signal on the controller side instead of the fan's IC which uses the first two pins and is generally not as good. I'm not sure if that's what this board is doing but it's definitely not using 4pin pwm which I think is necessary for the ML bearings to properly work.

The Tweaktown review is saying something similar to this although I'm inclined to interpret it as dc control as opposed to non-4pin pwm.

No, pwm isn't the only way to power and control fan speed. As described in the Tweaktown review, the sys_fan headers on the motherboard use variable voltage (dc) as opposed to pwm.

The design of the ML fans require pwm for the magnetic levitation bearings to work. Most pwm fans have their own IC that translates the pwm signal on the 4th pin to how the power is delivered.

No, pwm isn't the only way to power and control fan speed. As described in the Tweaktown review, the sys_fan headers on the motherboard use variable voltage (dc) as opposed to pwm.

The design of the ML fans require pwm for the magnetic levitation bearings to work. Most pwm fans have their own IC that translates the pwm signal on the 4th pin to how the power is delivered.

Are there any good fan controllers that support that nice 4-pin pwm you're saying I need for the fans to work as intended?

 

You mentioned getting a splitter or hub to have my CPU cooler's fan and my case fans running on my CPU fan header.

 

Would that work though?    

 

The case fans don't normally use the CPU temp reading to determine speed adjustment based on the fan curve so I'm wondering if that might not control the case fans as accurate since the temp readings the sys fan headers use would be ignored.

The cpu_fan header is 4pin pwm. It'd be easier to use a hub or splitter off of that instead.

The sys_fan headers use a motherboard temp sensor and isn't necessarily the best reading to base speeds off of anyway.

Can the single CPU fan header handle the CPU fan and additional case fans?

 

I mean there's only so much power to a single fan header isn't there?
