Help understanding mining

I keep hearing about the major mining surge with the graphics cards, I bought the rx 580 at release for $230 8gb sapphire @ 1411mhz and have it in a ryzen 1700 system right now, and just wondering if its worth to start mining. I see that one bit coin is $2k usd right now, how long does it take to get a bitcoin? how does mining pay you?, whats the best cryptocurrency, what are hashes? what are you solving? i know they arithmetic equations, but what is the answer used for? cracking a encryption for a safe? or like finding out complex stuff like the mass of a planaet million light years away or something? just really curious about this stuff thank you for any answers

You don't mine bitcoins. You mine Etheruem or Zcash. Just think of it like math problems your GPU does and once you complete one you get paid. In terms of why it all exists. Well that started with bitcoins and the orginal blockchain and honestly no one really knows and we don't even know who made it. But if it makes your money no one really questions it.

Bitcoin is really no longer possible to mine without a supercomputer. The current craze is in Ethereum. It has been popular for a little while now so I doubt there is much more time to get in the game and make any real money. The more time that passes the slower it takes to mine cryptocurrency. I am no expert in mining, so I can't answer your more in depth questions, but you are paid by exchanging your cryptocurrency for real money in an online exchange much like a currency exchange. This is why there is variance in value.

so you are misinformed and spreading it, thanks a lot.

ethereum is growing a lot for  a reason, its much better than bitcoin, having faster transactions and a proper roadmap with includes going away from gpu mining to more efficient ways to achieve consensus.

plus ehtereum only taxes the gpu, and even then almost only the memory so you can even game while mining and still get 50% of the hash rate

Would still disagree with this.  I have no issue using my PC while mining, only need to stop it to game (Will run video fine mostly). Although you may not make a lot of money mining alt coin (A few dollars/ per card), it is still categorically false to say it is unprofitable against power costs with proper hardware (In many cases at least, still fine with 31c/ KWh here). The long term stability of each coin will vary just like real currency will, but the popular ones at the moment like Eth and Zcash are stable and only really growing (Especially Eth, BTC is only going to grow realistically). I'm able to keep my 1070 under 50C while mining, I dont see how that could ever cause an real damage in the long term.

They are made for playing games and putting images on a screen a few hours a day.

except with ethereum only the memory is pegged, the gpu core is basically at idle, so most people under-clock the core and undervolt the card so the impact on longevity will be lower than mining bitcoin

Personally I don't enjoy playing games at 7fps, maybe you think differently.

It would take many years to kill it this way, the typical cause of death for ming GPUs is simply that they were overvolted and had insufficient cooling.

Basically there are huge data storages with raw data that needs to be "mined" processed into something useful, your GPU does this work for someone who pays you back in this virtual currency thingy.

Are they on load 24/7? Just saying it wouldn't be a bad idea to do so (Cant hurt, may save arguments and problems later). 

Please quote our replys so we get a notification and can reply easily. Never cheap out on a PSU, or I will come to watch the fireworks.
