One dusty server

So my NAS server has been having some slowdown lately, and I traced it back to overheating and HDD issues. I haven't touched the system in 2 years  (it was running 24/7 in my basement closet). This is what greeted me:

Lesson of the day: Don't forget to clean your NAS server.

P.S. The fact that it has a Pentium 4 also contributed to the overheating.

Given the amount of dust inside, I would not use a can of dust at first.  Before using the can of dust, or an air compressor, I would first use a vacuum hose to suck out as much of the stuff as possible.  Then after the vacuum, then take it outside and use an air compressor.  But use the vacuum first.

I have a very powerful leaf blower…

Maybe I should do that before anything else?

I would still try the shop vac first, then outside with the leaf blower.  But don't forget, the real tiny stuff can be forced into some of the most awful places on the motherboard when using high pressure air to remove it.  That's why I would prefer the shop vac first.  At least that is what I do with mine but I never let it get as bad as shown in the picture.

Why? Whats wrong with canned air? I have used it on a few computers and apart from the fact you have to pay for every can, it seems fine.

Generally, nothing is wrong with it. With this much dust however a vacuum will be much more effective at cleaning out the worst of all. And with this much dust you would not want to stand anywhere near the computer when using canned air, i guarantee you...
