Replace my i5-4690k?

System Summary:

i5-4690k(Not OC'ed - i know it's a waste) https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117372

Windows 10 64-bit

16GB DDR3 RAM

GTX 1070 8GB

250GB SSD SATA III

3TB HDD

1080p 60Hz 2010 Monitor https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236052

--------------------------------------------------------

After Playing PUBG it's come to my attention that my GTX 1070 is being bottlenecked by my CPU. This sucks balls.

So two things.

1) Will buying a good CPU fan/heatsink and overclocking to like 4.0 or 4.4 provide a significent enough leeway to remove the bottleneck?

2) Or should i start looking into a new CPU? If so,..with some of my favorite games still using only 1-4 cores would i be remise if i got an AMD?

3) Or just wait for something else?

My first build ever was AMD, but I soon learned the value of stronger cores and went with Intel for my next build. As a light hobby i stream, record, and edit video.

So if option 2, which brand should i get, why, and then which model/generation/whatever and why?

I'm looking into the 4790k, because more games are going beyond 4 cores now. As well as a better cooler for overclocking. If I'm not mistaken i can use the cooler well into the future for any CPU?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-i7-4790K-4GHz-Quad-Core-BX80646I74790K-Processor/132219436985

The 4790k is $300, to me it seems i'm halfway to just buying a new cpu and motherboard. Makes me wonder if i should just wait, buy a new cooler, and suck it up until then.

I'm very unsure about AMD. With the new generation of consoles being 8 threads I believe 8t PC Games are going to start coming out of the wood work. So i think it's important my next upgrade is at a minimal 8 cores. Might not have to be intel.

Thing is, I'm getting conflicting reports about Ryzen. Also, if i'm streaming should i go for 10-12 cores? 8 for the games, and the extra for OBS Software streaming. Squeezing out more in that 3300 bitrate makes a difference.

When I bought the 1070 I wanted to be sure i could keep things at 60 frames without lowering settings, but i didn't realize my 95 would bottleneck it. Some people are saying i'm not bottlenecking it, but a friend of mine with a 1060 and a i7 at 1600 by 900 is getting more frames than me.

Are you sure it's bottlenecking? A G4560 barely bottlenecks a 1070, depending on the title.

For pure frame pushing, 7700K wins every time.

For anything else including gaming while doing other stuff, Ryzen.

To be honest, i'd take the  1700 over the 7700K or my 6700K, and i'd take the 1600 over any i5. Ryzen won't bottleneck anything. Sure, stronger cores mean more for games, but the performance difference is minimal.

In addition, Canonlake is rumored to have a mainstream 6 core CPU. Games will start optimizing for more cores because of this, so more cores will mean better performance soon. Ryzen will age really well, whereas 4c 8t are starting to become overshadowed by 6cores and 8cores.

tl;dr - ryzen

My i5-4460 (the one from my dead old PC) wouldn't bottleneck a 1070. Your CPU is not the issue. Keep it. It has so much life in it. Your CPU is basically a small 4790k.

Just buy a new monitor, your current one sounds like it's not going to do your system any good.

gtx 1070 works good even with i7 2600k, you may overclock it or upgrade to haswell i7 (so no need for new mb) and you'll be able to install 1080 ti

there will be a difference m8,i know its the same architecture but hyperthreading and a higher base/boost clock makes a good difference. another benefit of that is that he doesnt have to upgrade the motherboard and ram aswell

None of your noobs get the point. Lower resolution monitors puts more stress on the CPU than the GPU of course there is a bottleneck at 1080p, but anyway you really need to overclock the 4690k to keep up with high end gpus. 1080p with a GTX 1070 locked at 60hz is a waste of good hardware as it is even without the bottlenecking.

Also that monitor is older than the system itself..

Like I said earlier, that monitor is doing more bad than good.

Could you explain? wouldn't a lower rez just make everything easier on everything?

Also, will overclocking make more than a handful of frames difference?

So you are using a gtx 1070 with a 1080p 60Hz monitor? Why?O.o There's no way it's being bottlenecked, it might not be fully utilized but your monitor is a bottleneck anyway.

every new intel generation have only ~10% improvement from sandy bridge, some even less (like ivy bridge or kaby lake) so overclocked it can be installed with 1080 ti with no problems

When the resolution increases the GPU has to work harder to push the extra pixles meaning the CPU has more headroom. At resolutions like 1080p with a high end GPU, the CPU tasks are roughly the same however sense the GPU does not have enough stuff to do to push it to 100% usage the CPU ends up being the "bottleneck" because there is less for the GPU to do. It is really hard to explain and not a lot of people truly know why this happens.

My recommendation:

  1. Get a better CPU cooler and overclock your i5-4690K (e.g. 4.4 GHz, or beyond if possible)
  2. See if that meets your expectations and relieve the "bottleneck"
  3. If it is still a problem, then proceed with getting a i7-4790K
  4. You already have a better cooler in which you can use with the i7-4790K, so you can in turn, overclock this CPU too

Keep in mind, PUBG is still NOT A COMPLETE FINISHED PRODUCT GAME.

The optimizations are still pretty garbonzo -- expect quite a bit of changes and updates to come.

You should look at the used market for 4790Ks. I've seen some good deals on them (Mostly because people are jumping ship to Ryzen).

Also, you should overclock, but be mind of temps. It will give you a good amount of boost for gaming.

I also run a 2700K (overclocked to 4.9 GHz) and it runs just fine with my 980 Ti / 1070 (Though the 1070 is in my server now). Even my older 2500K (4.6GHz) ran just fine. I only upgraded to the 2700K because I need a little more boost for my usual tasks (coding / 3D modeling / browsing). I don't game much though, but I'm positive your CPU can run the 1070 just fine after a good overclock. You'll know if you have a CPU issue if your CPU is pinned at the 90% range trying to run a game. After getting the 2700K though, my game that used to run at 70% load on the 2500K now runs at a mild 40% on the 2700K. Not bad for $130 last summer.

Also, welcome fellow user of using 1070 or 980 Ti for playing 1080p 60Hz games. haha.

I'm going to get a Noctua Fan, and overclock. I will also keep an eye out for good deals on used i7-4790k processors. Maybe i can get one for $200.

Yeah, I've seen quite a few deals for a 4790K being sold with the motherboard for $300...People are really jumping ship to Ryzen.

Hmm, you might also check out EK's Vardar fans. I have BeQuiet fans and they're great, but I don't think they're good for heatsinks, but I have the Pure Wing 2 (airflow). The Silent Wings 3 actually give noctua a run for their money if you can find any.
