mitx = blower

blower takes air from inside the case and blows it out of the exhaust of the card

any other size should go open air, as it takes the existing air inside the case and then .. blows it back into the case,, you have more airflow for that in a larger case.

budget is on the lower side, so hybrid or water cooling is not an option. I am also wanting to build a mini itx build and was wondering what case and what style of card to use for best performance. Thanks and your help is greatly appreciated!

this somewhat depends on the case as well but if you have a Aircooler on the CPU i would go with a blower style card.

Some itx cases have the graphics card near a vented panel where an open air is fine.

it's not so much about getting the fresh air in it's more about the open style coolers putting the hot air inside a small itx build and that will effect cpu temps more.

Well I was looking at either the Inwin, fractal design nano S or phanteks enthoo evolv itx.

If those are mini-towers, go for open-air designs. HTPC and small cuboids are where blowers should be, which is why open-air test benches baffle me when it comes to thermals of the blower cooler (they don't indicate that they run hot in an ideal environment).

Yes they are mini itx cases. Thanks!

Well I have a corsair h100 AIO cooler on an i7 4770. Looking at cases such as the fractal design nano s where the psu is very close to the gpu and the phantenks enthoo evolv itx

Don't buy an open air card with a case like the Nano S. The PSU almost completely blocks one of the two fans in a typical dual fan open air card. Bitwit tested an open air 1070 vs a Founders Edition 1070 in the Nano S, and they both ran at roughly the same temps and clockspeeds, but the FE card was actually quieter and kept cpu temps lower.

Now if you were going with a mid tower or larger the open air card would be better, but the PSU being in the way kills any advantage you'd have going open air in a small case like the Nano S.

Now if you wanted a mini ITX case like say an NCase M1, Corsair 250D, or Dan A4 SFX where the gpu fans were by vents and not blocked by the PSU you'd probably be fine going with an open air card. But I wouldn't buy an open air card for a tower style mini ITX case with bottom mounted psu.

I have to her opportunity to by a hybrid 1070 for a good price. My question is would it fit in a nano s? Or what itx case would fit it?

I would imagine you could put that 120 mm rad as a front intake, but I don't know for sure. Maybe check with EVGA's tech support?

Just grab a 1080 FE on the second hand market, make a custom fan curve and you're set.
