Overclocked i7-4790k

Just wondering if these tempeeratures are okay. The fans ramp up when it gets above 80 so it never goes higher, although it is very close.

It is an i7-4790k that I overclocked using my motherboards OC tweaker. Its using an NZXT Kraken x52

Does seem to be running hot, but is that okay for an overclock?

I believe it overclocked it from 4.00Ghz to 4.5Ghz.

that is honestly pretty bad. mine will do 4.8GHz at 1.275V, gets way too hot for my air cooler to handle at those settings but im sure mine will go to 5GHz once i get it under water cooling. this is way too much voltage for this overclock, mine does 4.5GHz at basically stock voltages

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

You believe? What? xD  Did you overclock it yourself or did you use one of the OC profiles?

Anyways, if you want better temps, you should delid the CPU

I've got mine at 1.3volts at 4.6 and even with the 360mm AIO from EKWB it still gets to those temps, I am planning on delidding when I have the time

Yeah, you can definitely get the same overclock (4.6GHz) with slightly less voltage if you overclock it yourself ;)

That's frightening though.

There's too much to do for a CPU, and I don't know much about it. How do I know its stable, could it destroy? etc etc.

There are plenty of videos on YouTube that tell you exactly what to look out for when overclocking your CPU.

1.324V is quite a lot for Haswell, the temperature is fine.

you are fine untill 1.4V tbh but its waaaay too much voltage for this frequency

When overclocking what is a high temperature? I believe CAM isnt very accurate, never has been for me.

I ran my 4790k at 4.8Ghz, 1.412v (from memory) for over two years - no issues at all.

100% CPU load took it to 82 deg c. I was using a 240m AIO CPU cooler that did a great job.

I only gamed on it, but pushed it real hard often for 6-8 hours at a time and never saw an in game temp above 72 deg c.

This was on an already second hand chip, that I have now sold to a friend who has reported no issues at all.

Use RealTemp, it is optimized very well for Intel CPUs.

Mid 80*C to low 90*C is still all right but obviously, you would want to keep it lower if possible. Most people prefer mid to high 70*C.

Beware of very high voltage even if the temperature is fine, electromigration will start to kick in somewhere at 1.3+ V which will start to degrade your CPU, by how much... depends.

Definitely not 1.4V for daily usage even with adaptive voltage. I would not recommend going above 1.35V, preferably above 1.3V on Haswell.

Also, 1.4V is something even a custom water cooler would have trouble to deal with most non-delided Haswell CPUs.

I could run 1.4V 4.8GHz just fine with my NH-D14 when I was using my I5 4690k

Even with AVX? I really doubt that.

It got to 95C IIRC, that wasent my daily clock seeing as I could do 4.7Ghz at 1.335V and it ran much cooler, somewhere in the low 80s

yah i ran it at 4GHz on my I5, havent done much overclocking on my I7 yet because of heat though but i ran that at 4GHz too just fine

That a lot of voltage for 4.6. I got 4.5 on mine with a slight undervolt and 4.6 on stock voltage

System specs:

4790k

GTX 1050

16GB DDR3

Samsung evo SSD
