Are the first two Witcher games any good/worth getting during the summer sale?

Bleedingyamato

I noticed GOG seems to have started its summer sale and if the first two Witcher games are on sale I was thinking about getting them.

I know 3 is considered very good but idk about 1 and 2.

Edit:. Are the storylines of the Witcher games connected or standalone?

Story wise, they are all excellent.

Gameplay wise, you will most likely hate W1 with passion, W2 is a lot better in that regard and W3 is really good.

It is up to you. I started and stopped playing W1 several times because of the gameplay.

I gave it multiple chances, last try I grinded my teeth and endured about 10h, then the story kicked in really hard and I enjoyed the game till the end.

While I don't like cutting stories in half, I'd advise you to get the 1st game as well. The gameplay isn't the best from an RPG, but at least it isn't difficult like Icewind Dale (has a great combat system, but it'll lay the smackdown on "yo bit#h @$$" (IGN 10/10).

The 2nd game fixes most of the issues of the 1st and has a better story.

Also, don't play the 1st with speakers if there are people in the house since some sounds literally sound like "moans" even though the character has a stomach ache.

Steam had the whole trilogy on sale last year for dirt cheap. I bought them and couldn't get an hour into the story because of the controls. They just didn't work and were not polished.

Yeah, I bought all three games and probably got an hour into the story before I gave up.

While the games are isolated enough that you don't need the other titles, having the first gives some much needed clarity to the 2nd's elements (and appreciation for CDPR fixing those elements) and groups.

I felt similarly about Dragon Age 2.  That game was terrible compared to the first game.

Ah.

I think what I'd like clarity on is what the heck your profile picture is supposed to be.  ?

I keep forgetting to ask.

They are connected, but you can certainly do just fine playing them out of order. Though of course playing later games is going to spoil some events from previous ones. And, hell, just the first few minutes of The Witcher is going to spoil the books. So unless you want to start at the very, very beginning by reading a long series of translated Polish fantasy novels from the 90's (which isn't a terrible idea, btw), avoiding spoilers completely is a losing battle.

The earlier Witcher games have a reputation as flawed gems. They're brilliant games, but it's very hard to tell in advance if you're going to get along with them. For the prices I have a hard time saying you shouldn't at least try them, but no guarantees. They do not have the polish or mass appeal of The Witcher 3.

WItcher 1 was very good, but is a bit old to modern standarts, witcher 2 is a linear Version of Witcher 3.

As long as the spoiled stuff isn't too severe I think I'd be ok with that.

I didn't know there were books the Witcher games are based on.  ?

I already have 3 myself and after the other responses here I got 1,2, and 3 for my friend.

I guess I may as well get 1 and 2 for myself since they're so cheap.

It's a different style of game than 2 and 3, more hardcore PCRPG, but I enjoyed Witcher 1 more than Witcher 2.

It's not as action-oriented, is top-down, and has a bigger emphasis on figuring out quests.
