Leaving Computer on?

Hi! I was just curious on how leaving a computer on, while running a heavy minecraft server (FTB Infinity), really affects my computer. They thought it was a great idea to go explore super far so now my back-ups are over a gig each. I'm not too concerned about that because I have a lot of memory though. I'm asking this because I'm in college and work full time, so I'm usually pretty busy. They all want me to keep it on 24 hours though. Yah it's fine, it'll still be less demanding than folding for instance and I know people who fold 24/7 with no hardware failure in years.

 

Your PC will be one of the most power consuming electronics in the house though.

Other than power draw it should be fine... doubt it would run fully, but if it did then it's approx 1Whr every 2 hours, so about 12 units of electricity a day, so here in the UK would be about £1.44 day or £43 per month if running fully to add to your electric bills.

Cadence is correct. Fans will probably wear out a little faster (not gonna be a big difference, the fans will likely survive the entire pc's lifespan regardless), if your hard drives don't spin down when inactive then they'll wear down a bit faster. Realistically, your hardware won't be greatly impacted in any way but your power bill might go up a bit. An alternative solution to this is hosting it on a VPS, but that obviously costs money.

I will actually disagree with Jade and say that you should be better off keeping your PC running 24/7.

 

The amount of "wear" on hard drives from spinning is infinitely smaller than then wear caused by turning on and off and reaching certain rotation speed and certain temperature (metal in platters heating and stretching every time you turn on the pc).

 

I keep my pc running 24/7 - the oldest hard drive in the PC has 57500 hours of operation (2395 days or 6 1/2 years) and in that time frame it was only turned off and on 330 times (usually power failures or windows updates reboots or cleaning dust from pc or adding hard drives, changing video cards)

 

Fans these days are also designed for tens of thousands of hours so they'll last.

 

The only problem you may have is noise .. if you can sleep with the computer turned on, you can relax and let it run 24/7

You'd be fine running a system 24/7. I run two old-ass abused Core 2 Duos systems 24/7 at full load doing F@H with no issues.
