Which cpu to go for?

Go to solution Solved by Mooshi,

Definitive answer: Get a Ryzen 1600 (non-X) and fast ram.

That's it. The X models don't guarantee a higher overclock and both X and non-X models cap out around the 4Ghz mark.

You could either get a R7 1700 at $329, or go for something a little more budget friendly like the R5 1600, which still packs a punch with 6 cores and 12 threads.

I don't think you necessarily need to get more than a 1600, honestly.

New upgrade plan https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/6yTwf8

My current case is a fractal design define r4 but I don't like it because it doesn't have a glass side panel so I decided to upgrade the case cause I want it to be a rgb build

Ram is the one part of Ryzen that is a pain. I got the "made for Ryzen" G.Skill Flare X 3200mhz kit and my board said they are on the vendor list...but they won't boot at their stock spec--this is with a bios update. Maybe with some tweaking, in the mean time I do have them at 3020mhz thanks to bclk overclocking. (rated speed is 2993mhz without it) AMD is releasing updates to sort out the ram issues.

Ideal config with Ryzen currently regarding ram are fast 16gb kits in dual channel. Beyond 2 dimms and 8gb per stick, Ryzen has issues with speed if you're using something like 4 ram sticks or 16gb per stick.

Whatever mobo you choose just get ram on the mobos memory qvl list and that can reach 2933 or 3200. If you want a more budget option you could get a 1600+MSI b350 pc mate+g skill 3200 MHz cl 16 Ripjaws v ram.

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.
