It's not like they're profiting from recording the concert (Since the recording is inevitably gonna be shit, and absolutely no substitute for being there in person, or watching the official (and professionally recorded) concert video).

1. Some people upload this stuff to YouTube or others so it's basically piracy. 
2. It's unfair for us people who paid for the concert. 
3. And that's the point, the video will look and sound awful so why bother record it? Why not put the phone in the pocket or bag, listen to the performance and enjoy the experience?
4. It's kinda disrespectful to the performers.

I disagree with all of your points except #3.

 

For #1, it's a shit recording, that won't prevent anyone who was going to buy the song/album/concert video from doing so.

 

That's like saying garbage Theatre Cam recordings are preventing people from buying the Blu-Ray - yeah anyone who would watch that piece of shit cam was never gonna spend money on a Blu-Ray.

 

#2, how is it unfair? It shouldn't take away from your experience. You paid for a ticket. So did they. As long as they're not shoving the phone in your face, it should be no different then if they decided to take a vlog or check their email or hold up a lighter. You were there, someone watching the video wasn't. They're not getting the experience that you paid for anyway.

 

#3, I agree that personally I wouldn't bother, because it's crap and won't look and sound good. But other people have different ideas of what they like to look at. Perhaps they want to re-watch the video to enhance their memories of the concert and pseudo "relive" it in their mind.

 

#4, no idea why this is disrespectful to the performers. The only way it would be disrespectful in my mind is:

A. The recording was somehow distracting to the performers (Eg: bright floodlight or constant flashes, etc - but most performers are used to camera flashes anyway)

B. The recording was somehow professionally done and a valid alternative to the official concert DVD - which it won't be.

 

I understand that you feel strongly about it, but looking at it objectively, I just have trouble seeing what the actual problem is.

Oh I forgot something. People using their phones and to some extent big ass tablets for recording a concert is not just an eyesore but also a distraction. It blocks the view of the people at the back.

As I noted, if they are blocking people's view, and/or shoving their device in someone else's face, that goes beyond simply "recording" the show.

 

Furthermore, above all else, you should respect the performers wishes. If, when the concert starts, they ask people not to record, people should listen and follow suit. But lots of performers don't care and/or don't say not to do it. In those cases, I feel if you are not getting in someone else's way, then you should be able to record if you want.

 

As for it being an eyesore? Well, lots of things are eyesores and potentially distracting. The 6'3 bear in front of you with the assless chaps might be distracting too, but you just have to deal with it.

 

Look at the concert, ignore the dude 3 seats over with the iPad. If the dude in front of you has an iPad and it's blocking your view, politely ask him to move it out of your way. If he doesn't, go summon security and let them deal with it.

I nearly had a fist fight with the man blocking my view with his iPad during a concert. Good thing he's all bark but no bite so he stopped recording thankfully. Although it would make my night if his iPad shattered.

Coming back to this.

Honestly, I have quite a few unpopular opinions of mine, some of which I've already described, so time to be controversial.

 

1. Despite all the hype, I won't play Overwatch until I'm comfortable with it. Team Fortress 2's community isn't particularly great but it's not nearly the toxic that OW gets to. Not to mention far less porn, although it exists.

 

2. I'm gay, but honestly, the LGBT community seems really hypocritical to me. They push inclusiveness and tolerance but gays in the community scorch gay libertarians/conservatives and bisexuals in general. It's a cancer community, although, it's not bad here at all.

 

3. The Sega Saturn could've worked far better had Sega not thrown in a basically useless second CPU and not rushed it to the North American market to May instead of September or whatever their plan was.

 

4. Grand Theft Auto IV is a better game than GTA V in many ways, primarily in its general direction of the feel of the game. I really like GTA IV's gritty feel and the OST of it far more than GTA V's.

 

5. I'm from the West Coast, but honestly, East Coast rap is better. Always aimed to tell stories rather than going an in-your-face route with it all. That's not to say WC rap is bad, but IMO East Coast rap > West Coast.

 

I'll eventually come up with more.
