It's a quad core with decent clock speeds. I just don't know about single threaded performance and whatnot.

Would this preform good with VR?

are you REALLY talking about a core 2 quad Q6600? you gotta be kidding...

 

that thing already has a hard time with most newer non-VR games and almost ANY modern 4-thread CPU is running circles around it.

don't bother with the i3, you get within 5% of its performance from the G4560 for way cheaper, and if you really want to VR look second hand, Try find a Pre built machine and just take the MB+CPU+RAM. I'd advise looking for a i7-3770/4770 or a i5-4460. 3rd and 4th gen perform right up there with the new ones just not as energy efficient. 

 

Great source is the new Junk yard wars, you want a store like the one linus and luke went to, one that grabs OEM systems from companies when they upgrade and they re-purpose them. that combo with the new Nvidia cards that only need power from the Slot are perfect for a budget gaming rig. just avoid HP ones, they get realy iffy with Rams and their PSU's are kek. Dell/Lenovo would be fantastic.

i ran my DK2 off a 970+i5-4690K and it was fantastic :) did mostly do racing games and it handled them maxed out.

Yes you can! ...at least its capable. Pair it will a stronger GPU like a GTX 980 and your good to go! VR Games are more GPU heavy anyway.

No. Not even close. It can't run these games at 90fps. It'll stutter and you'll feel sick.

That test notoriously doesn't test cpu performance. In real games it'll stutter and hitch to the point of illness.

You can overclock the Q6600 to 3.2 - 3.3GHZ and it should work.

I have other higher end systems but I would like to see if a Q6600 paired with some decent ram and a good GPU (either GTX 1060, 1070 or 1080) would fair in VR. 

 

I'm curious to see how it performs.

Actually I would not pair it with the 1070 or 1080 because when it is far too unbalanced performance cripples even further, actually saw a bunch of videos showing how gaming felt much smoother on a g4560 with the 1060 than with the 1080 as the former actually caused more random stuttering.

Good to know! Although I was leaning towards the GTX 1060 (price wise) I'm glad to know that it would run smoother than higher end cards paired with that old CPU. 

 

Right now I have it paired with a GTX 960 and games run butter smooth, even ones like DOOM-2016. We shall see how it goes! thanks for the input btw!

You only have some chance if you BSEL mod the q6600, but even then I think a g4560/g4600 or an i3 6100 would be better.

BSEL brings the q6600 into the green but you cant use the rift due to sse 4.2 req now

You do NOT want to use VR on a CPU that cant at least maintain 60 FPS minimum.

 

I would put a modern quad (Sandy Bridge and newer from Intel or Ryzen from AMD) as a minimum, TBQH.

 

The experience on any GPU under a GTX 970/GTX 1060/RX 470/570 will also be trash.  Its not that you cant get the fps, its the fact that the aliasing in VR is horrid.  You need something that can push 4k at low settings at least.

 

Fallout NV in VR (using what amounts to a hack) works wonderfully on my GTX 1050 Ti laptop, but I can run it at 4k because its so old.  Newer games like Elite Dangerous have terrible aliasing by the time I get the settings configured to where Im not getting headset lag.  Its so bad that you can hardly read the in game text with the headset.
