You could wait for the S9. Then you could wait for the S10, then S11 and so on and so on. You'll be waiting forever if you keep waiting for the next best thing.

There's not really anything close to launch that's going to challenge the S8 much other than the next iPhone release, but you'll be paying a fortune. I would go for the S8 now.

If you want best in class developer support your only real option is the iPhone.

Sad but true. The iPhone 8 will be announced in a few months, you should wait for that unless you need a phone right now.

The iPhone 8 should be shaking things up quite a bit and should fix all the valid complaints about the iPhone.

next iPhone release

i phone the iPhone 7plus, its average at best, not really worth its money, best part about it is its battery life, stability, and integration with MacOS.  the S8 plus is a much better phone in almost every way, also a huge XDA community behind it.

OP get the s8 or wait for the pixel 2, wait for i phone 7s if you want a safe phone, i don't think it's worth the wait.

i think that op3t has a very huge xda community making customizations such as dedicated kernels and custom roms for less money... Unless you want only power and you love s8 desing af (who doesnt) + you have enough money for it, then just get it

How long are you willing to wait? There's quite a few phones left for the year, depending on what you're looking for.

  • Samsung Note8. Think of it as a better S8+
  • OnePlus 5. Should have top notch spec, a lower-than-flagship price, dual cameras. Though they're unlikely to have anything truly revolutionary in terms of design.
  • Pixel 2 is coming. It'll have the best support as far as Android goes. Not much is known about it other than it'll be waterproof.
  • ZTE Axon 8. More budget friendly, they were one of the very few companies to have front facing speakers. Next phone should be quite nice, it was better than the OnePlus 3 IMO.
  • Andy Rubin is making a cell phone. It's supposed to be quite something, but again little is known.
  • Asus has their Zenfone 4, 4s and 4 Max coming out at the end of the month. The Zenfone 3 Zoom is amazing, and these should be better than that.
  • If you want to risk bootlooping LG V30 is coming out soon.

Truth.

Though, there's loads of phones coming out in the next few months ;)

The Google phones are pretty up there.

They might be fixing the hardware issues, but as long as their still extremely locked down OS wise I still have plenty of complaints about the iPhone.

If you want a beautifully designed phone, take a gaggle at the Sony Xperia X series:

They all are fast, have awesome (And I mean awesome) cameras and sadly seem to be ignored by a lot of people. If I wasn't an Apple fanboy, I'd use one of these or an S8.

It surprisingly not locked down. Outside of customization you can do most everything. You might have to jump through a few hoops but iOS has never been limiting.

The frame of that thing looks terrible imo. That slow-mo fps is pretty good tho......

Yup. They do have a love-it-or-hate it design. And the only extra button is the camera button. And here's an XZ in a nicer black:

jailbreaking IOS device is not worth it, losing that amazing AppleCare support and security patches is not really worth the limited customization and system stability issues jailbreaking brings, if you want to customize get an android.

You could go for an Xperia XZ Premium (officially overkill). It's got a 5.5" display: at 1080p on my iPhone 6Plus, that's 401ppi, but this one is 4K HDR. It's a fancy TV packed into a smartphone for some... reason... I hope they have a reason?

Should I go and buy the Samsung Galaxy s8, or should I wait for a better phone? I'm honestly looking for good developer support and something with the amazing design for the s8. Is anything like that coming soon?

look at gsmarena and look for what you want there. it lets you compare all specs of the phone

IIRC it's only 4k at certain times, like when you're in the photos app. Otherwise it's just a standard 1080p screen.

Still nice though. One of my friends has the Z5 Premium and he says it's the best phone he's ever owned, he 100% is buying the XZ Premium on release.

Two things are important, besides what @Oshino Shinobu said. Is are what phone do you currently have?
If Samsung, S6 or earlier? Then do upgrade

Any other phone, I suppose the rule of thumb would be 2015 or earlier. If it's from last year, then really there's not much point in upgrading. Year to year, it's often incremental. More leaps when there's a larger gap in time.

I have an S6, I'm considering a LG G6 or Samsung S8+. Currently leaning towards staying with Samsung instead, which I had wanted to switch away from them but actually holding the S8+ damn it feels and looks nice.
