My pet peeve: motherboard layout and PCI-E retention clips

So, here I am, finally building new Ryzen-based system after couple of moths of buying components and waiting for platform to mature (at least a bit). System boots up, all lights green, I can connect my existing disks carried over from old computer with Steam library and stuff. And here comes my first part of this small rant about motherboards:

 

1. Why do manufacturers put SATA ports in place where they are inaccessible when I have longer graphics card? I cannot access first 4 SATA ports, because graphics card gets in a way.

 

Fine, no big deal, I remove the card and connect cables. But - uh-oh, here comes the biggest pet peeve of all:

 

2. WHY THERE IS THAT FRIKEN PCI-E SLOT RETENTION CLIP THAT I NEED TO PUSH TO TAKE CARD OUT, and it's under the GPU itself??? You see, I have fairly standard sized graphics card, speaking from today's perspective. Bottom part is where cooling is, I cannot push the clip from there. Top part is tiny bit higher because of backplate, but it should still reachable - unless I have installed tower CPU cooler. that prevents me from putting finger in there and pushing it! I constantly run into this problem with Hyper 212 and similar coolers, but now it is even worse because I have monstrous Noctua NH-D15. See that small dark ... thing above GPU and below the fan that needs to be pushed? Yeah, I barely see it too - and that's with camera flash on.

 

To make matters worse, I cannot remove fan from CPU cooler if I wanted to make a room - because retention clips for fan are in place where I cannot reach either due to graphics card!

 

So, guys, how do you solve this problem?

 

I have plugged hard drives into other SATA ports, which solver immediate problem of connecting those, but I truly fear the moment when I will want to remove card for upgrade or tear the system down. Honestly I do not have the answer on how to solve the problem with retention clips. I understand why they have to be there, but should MoBo manufacturers make them bigger or longer or different mechanism so I can at least reach and push them with long screwdriver?

I have the same mobo but use water cooling. The CPU power cable is oriented where it can't be removed if you have a radiator in the top. I had to carefully use a flathead screwdriver to remove the 8 PIN when my new powersupply came. 

 

I suggest using a long flathead screwdriver to push it down, there is room if you have a thin one.

I agree on the PCIE lock. The position of heatsinks on the motherboard make it impossible to click by hand so I have to use a pencil everytime

2. Preferable to use a thin plastic spudger or clean posicle stick to hit the pcie retention clip, screwdrivers can be used but if you accidentally slip and jab your mobo it could be a very very bad day

Bottom part is where cooling is, I cannot push the clip from there. Top part is tiny bit higher because of backplate, but it should still reachable - unless I have installed tower CPU cooler. that prevents me from putting finger in there and pushing it! I constantly run into this problem with Hyper 212 and similar coolers, but now it is even worse because I have monstrous Noctua NH-D15. Adding photo for illustration of what I am trying to to deal with right now:

 

See that small dark ... thing above GPU and below the fan that needs to be pushed? Yeah, I barely see it too - and that's with camera flash on.

 

To make matters worse, I cannot remove fan from CPU cooler if I wanted to make a room - because retention clips for fan are in place where I cannot reach either due to graphics card!

 

So, guys, how do you solve this problem?

 

I have plugged hard drives into other SATA ports, which solver immediate problem of connecting those, but I truly fear the moment when I will want to remove card for upgrade or tear the system down. Honestly I do not have the answer on how to solve the problem with retention clips. I understand why they have to be there, but should MoBo manufacturers make them bigger or longer or different mechanism so I can at least reach and push them with long screwdriver?

I had this problem during the first time setup on my evga ftw 2 x99 mobo, the top slot is the x16 slot, which with an aircooler on the cpu, makes it impossible to get to the release tab, I ended up pulling on the card and praying, the praying helped. now I understand why so many companies put the top slot as a x1 slot or m.2

Oh yes, manufacturers started to put those on side some time ago, at least for higher-end boards. Twisting and turning cables when trying to tug them behind the back can cause issues, I always fear I either tear down ports or damage cable.

 

Speaking about GPU length only, this particular MSI Tomahawk should not be a big problem when it comes to SATA ports being covered by big graphics card, they are out of the way. But I have seen boards where graphics card was in the way of plugging FP USB3 ports. Or USB3 cable - and those are pretty thick and inflexible - being in the way of plugging graphics card.

I know, it was just a convenient example of ports like that as I had it pulled up for something else, I have seen boards with sata ports standing like that where a long gpu would have covered them, or as you mentioned other ports and such that may be desired to be used.

The thing with PCIe locking clips located at the end of the slots is, they're designed for standard video cards like your typical GT710 or GT1030 and RX550. Anything larger say a GTX1060 with a triple fan shroud and dual slot, that clip becomes difficult to access and useless when tools are needed. Back when these locking clip just started to appear on them slots is just a tab located on the back. Problem is some are not gentle enough, so they break it. Next came the idea of making it act like ram locking clips, so when you pushed down, the card should pop up. Great for as I've mentioned before, your typical GT710 and similar one, but not your GTX1060 and such. There are some boards that have gotten it right by using a sliding lock mechanism or continue to use the ones that first came out
