EVGA 1080 SC decisions...

yannickverc

HeyGuys

To give you some history: my headset broke 2 days before warranty, sent it back, got full refund worth 299 euros. In the meantime I bought a Rode NT-USB and used my PM3's as new sound equipment.

Problem is that I'm doing quite some LAN parties and I'm not taking my Rode to that and the PM3's dont have a mic.

So the plan is the following:

Buy a HyperX Cloud II for 97 euro. And buy an EVGA 1080 SC ACX3.0 for 467 euro (669 but with the "discount" from my refund)

I'm also wondering if I can throw my Kraken X61 on that 1080 with their G10 bracket?

Currently running that on my 780ti.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Yes, EVGA SC cards have a reference PCB, so the G10 should fit perfectly. They offer some of the best price/performance 10 series cards, because they add a much more efficient cooler without modifying the founders PCB - modified PCBs don't offer much return on 10 series cards apart from with modding/extreme cooling, due to the power limits imposed by Nvidia.

669 seems very expensive though, 1080 prices have dropped recently. https://www.scan.co.uk/products/evga-geforce-gtx-1080-sc-gaming-acx-30-8gb-gddr5x-vr-ready-graphics-card-2560-core-1708mhz-gpu-1847m here is the 1080 SC for only 570 EUR, provided you are in Europe :)

I see. It's still a great card, and it will work with a G10, but I personally wouldn't pay that much for it, it's not that much cheaper 1080 Ti at that price. But whether you're willing to pay for it is up to you!

I highly recommend EVGA Superclocked line up, all my cards from this line up have had gold silicon which always allowed awesome overclocking, for the matter my Maxwell TITAN X EVGA Superclocked reaches 1582mhz stable on Air cooling from the Founders Edition cooler, making it a GTX 1080; Awesome.

nope :P not even a trottling one.

i moved from a well overclocked GTX 980ti to this GTX 1080 and even at bone stock it was head and shoulders above...like...20-25% faster before overclocking it.

There are Founders Edition 1080 Tis available around 800 in the UK, which has to import tax to the rest of Europe. So paying 130 more for an extra 30% performance over the SC 1080 is a much better deal, so I wouldn't personally pay 667 for a 1080, but it's up to you!

even assuming perfect scalling in every games (which couldn't be further from the thruth) and 6GB of VRAM on the 780ti (which is also most likely not the case) a single GTX 1080 would still shit all over 780ti SLI.

of course you're talking 1200$ of GPUs vs a 700$ GPU...

Anyways, stick to topic...check this out...even if you'd straight up DOUBLE the FPS in games of a GTX 780ti...you'd still fall quite a bit short of a FOUNDERS edition NOT overclocked GTX 1080...this is not even taking into account VRAM limitations, stupid power draw, heat...noise etc...the 780ti is ancient now and it has felt SO BAD in the charts nvidia left it behind completely and forgot abouut it...like...3 years ago

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1717?vs=1714

this is 2016 benches...in 2017 games...the ones that are optimized for the GTX 1080...it would be even worse...and SLI scalling...is like 40---45% on a good day going downhill with a following wind. get real bro :P

alright, since you want to argue it further...let me put this way then:

GTX 780ti in raw GPU performance is around 72% lower than a GTX 1080 according to 58 771 people who did the test:

http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-780-Ti-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1080/2165vs3603

So, you would need at least 72% uplift from SLI, running a game that require less than 3GB of VRAM, and this would be assuming the driver optimization would be just as good on kepler as it is on pascal...which we all know couldn't be further from the thruth...72% !!...i can count the games that offer such good SLI scalling on the fingers of one hand...in fact...rise of the tomb raider...other than that, you're looking at benchmarks...unigine, 3d mark...etc.

if that ain't clear enough...you'd have to tweak down the settings considerably in order to match stock GTX 1080 performance in modern games with two outdated 780ti.

Now, of course if OP already has a motherboard that support X8/X8 SLI...a good quality 750W gold PSU or better, and a huge case with good airflow...AND he can catch a used 780ti for 100$ or so...THEN it could be worth it...

Not arguing anything. It's a fact. My old cards give me better frame times. Little bit more fraterates. Simple as that. Fact.

Not saying to get two. Just stating that as an example. One isn't always better than 2. The same could be said the other way.

Won't be an issue. There are quite a few cars that don't even cool the vram. Could swap the fan on it   If you're that worried.

The thing that I am worried about is that the G10 fan will not be able to cool my Vram enough..

VRAM does not get very hot, most cards don't have active cooling on the vram chips and it's not an issue...VRM though the voltage regulation module these can get quite hot if you're overclocking the card so i would suggest sticking some small aluminum heatsinks on them it cost only a few bucks and will keep them in check.
