when i plugged it in while it was missing a pin the computer wouldnt even start, which confused me cause i figured that at least the fans would go

the fans should turn on actually... strange that they didn't.

but no, the computer won't POST or do anything more than power the fans.

A common mistake is not hooking up the power button.

is it hooked up, and have you tried turning on the PC simply by shorting the PWR+ and PWR- pins on the board?

It may possibly turn on, but give an error code. You can't do anything, even get into the BIOS.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Then how do boards supporting BIOS flashback work?  I'm thinking of boards (like some from ASUS and other brands I don't recall) that you can plug in a USB flash drive and update the BIOS (like on a Z170 board) before you've installed your Kaby Lake CPU.

Also would it spin up the platters on HDDs, as well as the fans, with no CPU installed, and/or flash any indicator lights? Or not even that?

Boards with special BIOS flashback contain a mini-CPU which is enough for BIOS updates, but nothing else.

Fans should spin up, but the HDDs won't

It might "start" in the sense that power runs through the motherboard and the fans begin spinning, but it'll probably just beep an error code at you and shut down. Your CPU basically is the computer.

Not sure how it is with new motherboard etc. but at work we had some PC without CPU.

Pressing power button did nothing. Fans wouldn't spin or anything, just after few sec it would start beeping like crazy.

On newer motherboard, fans should start spinning and LEDs should turn on. But without CPU, nothing else should work.

  • 6 months later...

Has anybody solved this problem, I have the same issue fans aren’t responding I have an asrock x99 extreme, I am waiting on the cpu.

I tried jumping the power connectors for the power button.

i jumped the 24pin green and black and the fans started spinning. What does that mean?

Otherwise the mobo is lifeless
