I wouldn't cheap out on hardware that will be used for developing video games. Yes in theory it should be okay. But not great, since UE4 is more depending on GPU than CPU if I'm not mistaken.

 

Then again, I have never used it to develop any games and I might not have a single clue what I'm talking about.

What about a 1600 + GTX 1070. the 1600 is less than a 7700K by $110, and the 1070 is only like $130 more than the 580. it's possible.

I7 7700K or Ryzen 7 1700

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

7700k has higher single core performance which will make most compiling and gaming faster than ryzen.

The only thing ryzen will be faster at is when calculating light maps and stuff like that, which you don't do as often as the other things.

I thought only inexperienced users thought that Ryzen was bad for gaming.

 

Ryzen is GOOD for gaming. just not as good in average framerate as the 7700K

Nobody would say that a 4770K is bad for gaming, and Ryzen is undeniably an upgrade from that.

just get the R7 1700, it helps to have more threads if you want to optemize for them seeing as more cores will be the future most likely

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Agree with others that Ryzen probably best for developpement.

Not sure this is going to happen before new CPUs are released...

 

I mean... 8 thread exist since like 5+ years and today 95% of games are still not using more than 4 threads... so.... yeah.....

 

Hoping to DEV to optimize games for 8+ threads is like hoping to receive a 10 000$ check at christmas from Santa Claus in person xD

devs are already optemizing for more then 4 threads, like basically every AAA game today benefits from Hyperthreding quite a bit. with Ryzen we saw octa cores at prices that werent insaine and honestly why would you not want to optemize for more cores? like really, give me a reason your game should preform the same on todays hardware and servral generations into the future because you didnt makre it run on more then 4 cores lol. either way i see the 1700 as the best choice here

the real question is what is the game you're building going to require. since compiling is not a huge task it might take allot longer but i would advise taking the CPU you want your game to run on ultimately.

I never said it was bad.

I said he would get better performance in gaming, coding, and compiling using the 7700k.
