Just a repeat really but more of a clarification.

 

3DS Max is great for characters, armor, and clothes. It's also arguably easier to learn than Maya.

3DS Maya is probably better for terrain, especially since they added the terrain tool recently.

They are also commonly used in the game industry so they pretty much have full game SDK support.

 

Blender can pretty much do the same things but also has a fairly advanced UI that can be a bit daunting to learn if you don't have much experience but it's free and open source.
