Local second hand shop said lowest watt there was is just a thermaltake 650w semi modular. anyone got any idea if this psu is good?

It really depends on the actual model, as good manufacturers can make really crappy PSUs for the lower ends of the markets.

Check out this thread if you want specifics.

Generally speaking, the Thermaltake PSUs you can afford are crap, and the ones you can't afford are solid PSUs but terrible value as compared to the competition at that price point.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

since when is 650w from a known manufacturer low(er) quality? I mean 650 is at least middle class.

Wattage != quality. Most like it's a Smart series and those are pretty bad.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Wattage =/= quality

thermaltake is a dcent company, i had a cx600 from corsair that was praised and when i bought it the fan rattled and died after 3 weeks. Many people have the exact same problem as well.

I love Thermaltake's cases and fans. Their power supplies are, by and large, horse sh*t.

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/EasonIDontKnowAnything/saved/#view=H6nhMp that's basically what I'll put in there. And I might upgrade the graphics card to a 750Ti if I can afford one lmao.

I don't see how bringing up your experience with an budget level power supply (the older CX revision) is relevant here. If anything it support the fact that you should not dictate a power supply position based solely on the rated wattage. For example, the Thermaltake Smart 650w is based on the CWT GPK platform which is the universal voltage input version of the CWT GPM based Corsair VS. The VS is an entry level design that's place lower than the CX.

An example of poor Thermaltake PSU is this: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/thermaltake-tr2-rx-750-w-power-supply-review/7/

violated ATX specs at 580wDC, and it burned out when trying to deliver it rated wattage on two different samples.

Yes, TT does have some reliable PSUs; however, as with any other company (regardless whether you find them to reputable or not), you should do proper research on the PSU on an unit by unit basis by reading up competent reviews.

Can you afford an EVGA 450B? Perhaps a Corsair CX450M?

Eh, I'd avoid buying a PSU secondhand unless it's under warranty and is a good PSU. Your choice is neither of those things.

If you can, I'd ditch the aftermarket cooler and put it towards a good PSU, since that will be better. (Assuming you are unable to get the stock cooler, which will cool the cpu fine).

Man fuck Thermaltake PSUs!

They are mostly subpar, loud as hell or too expensive for the performance.

Buy any Seasonic, Be Quiet Pure, Straight or Dark Power, Antec or Evga G-Series instead.

$40 that could be used for a component that could have had a greater impact on your pc build, compared to a part that is purely asthetics.

Yeah but they're all garbage. As @Drake10114has said, you're spending way more on a cooler than you need to and you should be buying a not crap PSU.

I'd buy a used PSU if A. It were a good PSU when new and B. Were still under warranty at the time of buying with proof of purchase and all that.

It is not bad, depending on what you plan to turn you pc into, i mean in like the next 7-8 years, then you might want to buy a psu around the 800w mark if you want to futureproof it, if you are not however then i recomend sticking with the one you have now.
