Best bang for buck 4K gaming laptop?

Hey all,

I'm looking at getting a new laptop for university. Max budget is £1300.

Currently I'm looking at the Dell inspiron 15 7567 4K model. As that is stretching my budget but it has everything I want. 

Currently I'm buying through the university so I can get a discount as they pay a bit of a contribution. So it has to be a new laptop. 

I will be using it for content creation..after effects. Light room. Premiere. Photoshop. As I do a TV production course. I want a 4K screen to future proof and just so that I get more detail out of the preview area when editing in premiere.

What would you recommend other than the Dell for the same price?

I found Asus Zenbook Pro and Lenovo Ideapad Y700 from Amazon UK with 4K display, i7 6700HQ CPU and 960M GPU (which is an older GPU)

I looked at lenovo before. Ive heard bad things about the hinge. Also my dad has the Y70 (one before this one) and I have a lenovo yoga and both have had problems with them so now as inclined. But the Asus looks good. Just had a look on the UK website and it doesn't seem it will be easy to find but I will have a look around some resellers and see what prices I get and what I think of it in comparison. Thank you for your help

The Asus has a large PCIe SSD which is great.

I've done some looking at both.

And I honestly don't know what to go for. I feel safer with the Dell as I have spent many hours looks at it and comparing it. What do people that are following this thread think about dell inspiron 7567 compared to Asus zenbook pro UX501VW

Not really. As I'm getting it through the university I'm not given money they buy the laptop on my behalf etc so then it also adds problems with warrenty etc.

Is it this model? I just found that the 7567 4K model has 512GB NVMe SSD too.

Go for the Dell 7567 then as it has a significant better gaming performance compared to the Asus one.

Well. The main two reasons I like the Asus are its thinner. But also I don't know the colour accuracy of the Dell's IPS panel but I do for the Asus.  Which is another reason to favour the Asus. However the dell is black and more powerful.

If you're not doing colour related editing work, you will not notice any difference in colour accuracy since both of them uses IPS panels. I have heard that some MSI laptop with 94% sRGB colour coverage TN panels has a poorer colour than IPS panels with lower colour coverage.

 

If you don't mind portability I suggest the Dell 7567. If you mind, get the Zenbook.

 

Bear in mind that thinner laptops seems to have higher temperatures.

Zenbook Pro is PenTile (RG/BW) not-true-4K. Don't get that if you're in it for the 4K.

 

Another option, with a display more dense than the Zenbook Pro but not quite as dense as 4K,

well once the pixel density becomes high enough it tends to get harder to tell the difference. if you showed me a screen that was 1440p vs 4k on such a small screen i would probably not be able to tell at all because both would have such a high pixel density. usually when people get 4k monitors its because they are getting bigger sized monitors where the difference is more preceptable.

Well that's you then. I can tell the difference between 1080p and 4K on a 15" screen. It's noticeable.

let me explain it in a way that will make sense. your normal 4k monitor is in the 30 inches area maybe 27 inchs. that means these screen have much lower pixel density when compared to the 4k screen on the 15inch screen. I mean those 4K monitors are considered overkill in alot of peoples minds and this screen has a way higher pixel density than that. i mean unless you are up real close to the screen you wont be able to tell the difference. its alot like the 8K monitor video Linus did. the only way you would even be able to likely tell it was an 8k monitor is because if you go real close there were many photo realist clocks on the screen. I mean that is cool and all but it don't see the practicality in it. i mean if they really wanted a good 4k screen to do content creation i would get a much bigger 4k monitor and just hook it up to the laptop. content creation on a 15 inch screen just seems like a subpar setup and making the screen 4k doesn't change a thing about that.

There IS a very easy way to tell the difference. That's in games. When you aim with a 4K display and zoom in suuuuuuper close with some rifle or some in-game feature, you don't get that pixel-sniping effect that only lets you dial in so precisely until the resolution hits its limit. 4k that's almost never going to happen, if at all.

 

Also the sharpness of the image itself, especially some games, will denote that using Anti-Aliasing is a waste for the most part. You wouldn't be able to see the jagged edges even if you wanted to. Only at a distance would you notice it... and even then it's unlikely except for the tiniest details.

what are you even talking about? do you really expect them to be able to play games in 4K on a laptop when most high end desktops can't? do you really think they were thinking about gaming in 4K? they said they wanted to do content creation which is the only reason one would go for the 4k screen. no point in a 4k screen for gaming if you cant run any games at 4k.

Really? So exactly what do you mean you can't play at 4K? You mean 4K ultra settings? No shit sherlock. But no one gives a flying fuck if you can't play at maximum settings. What with most games today looking REALLY GOOD even on lowest, it's not like you're missing all that much. Hell, an example of THEN vs NOW, check out Crysis vs Crysis 3. Low Settings first, then Ultra. One game looks like garbage, and the other looks... pretty good actually.

 

No one expects a laptop to be able to do 4K on super high settings. If you honestly think that's what people are doing, you're exceptionally wrong. Two former roommates have 4K monitors and run games on medium settings because in shooters, you aren't looking at the explosions, you're looking at the people you're trying to shoot.  You're PLAYING A GAME, not watching a movie.

you are the reason Einstein once said "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." i mean the laptops they are talking about don't even have gpus capable of running a 1440p panel at medium settings let alone a 4k panel.

also when talking about a post don't go and plug link for a laptop that they haven't even mentioned. i could easily put a link for a msi titan laptop and say you can play on a 4k panel with that but it is irrelevant to this conversation. if you want to talk about something that is related to the original post go ahead but you are talking nonsense that isn't related to what the original post was talking about. he asked if getting the 4k model of a specific model was worth it and i stand by my statement  that it really isn't.
