Upgrade current or go new build?

With Ryzen out and some great Intel options I am wondering what would be the better course in a few months time. I game at 1080p and the only AAA I have for now is BF1 although I play more World of Warships at the moment. However I hope to get into some more high end games soon including the Witcher III and Skyrim Special editions that came out. Thus I want to know if buying an i7-2600 or even 2600K used would be a good option for me. That is IF my motherboard can handle overclocking the K since it is not a Z class. It is also a first generation Sandy Bridge and I believe it may have the Sata bug that plagued the early models. It is already giving me some trouble on a few of the ports. Obviously I would like a new GPU to get the best results and I am torn between three options, 480/580 8G, 1060 6g, or try for a 1070. Which leaves me to my big dilemma, if I only upgrade then I can get the better GPU! While a new build in either platform will be at least 300-500 dollars and result in a cheaper GPU option out of necessity. I don't render much video except for family film, however with my son just turning 4 that may increase soon. So let me know what you guys and gals think would be the best option going forward in a few months time if you were in my shoes. As always I appreciate your time and input.

grab the i7 27000 or if your mobo will take the 3770 grab it. then look a rx470/570 because they are similar performance to the rx 480/580 but cheaper

update BIOS and then get a 3770 (assuming the PC is not a prebuilt)

3770 + GTX 1070 is a great match.

If this is your board: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8P67_PRO/HelpDesk_CPU/ , you have quite a options on your current platform and it would be waste of money to throw away all the components you already have like RAM and MoBo. I would go with 1060 6GB and maybe buy a new SSD or just a few beers 9_9. If you have display with higher resolution then FHD (and I do not mean WUXGA, those 120 vertical px will not break it :D), you will probably have to go with 1070, but for the games you play/would like to play 1060 6GB is quite adequate.

If you decide to go this was, do not forget to update your BIOS first (as RadiatingLight pointed out).

I will see what version of the bios I have. I know I updated just recently and had some trouble. Hopefully if I can update it I can find a 3770 and try t out. Thanks for the advice.

I have been looking at all the options and have come up with some local CPU's. One is an I7-2600 locked that was pulled from a workstation comp for 90$.

The other is a 2600K for 100$ that the seller replied with this information. "Sure do. I had it at 4.5Ghz 24/7 at around 1.35V It can reach 5Ghz if you've got really good cooling ” With this much time on overclock I am wondering if the chip may be approaching the end of its life, and if the locked processor would be the better option at this point? I would also need to invest in an aftermarket cooler for the K on top of the CPU.

Depends on your budget (you are right about the cooler), but I would not be worried to much about wear on this CPU it is still quite new and even if you would continue to use it at 1.35V 24/7 is not going to break it any time soon (it will most likely survive longer then your motherboard). But as always with 2nd hand CPUs it is risk (he might have had it running with overvolted RAM/memory controller and that would if he was reckless shorten the usable lifespan of the CPU much more :/ ). But I'd say go for it, since it is local, you can try to return/throw at the seller in case id does not work correctly xD

P67 chipset supports overclocking AFAIK. I say update BIOS and grab a 3770k if you can. If that's even necessary. Your i5 should be fine for gaming, so you don't really need to upgrade it unless you feel it's somewhat lacking. Your GPU isn't even that old and should honestly still be fine for 1080p, but if you really want an upgrade, there isn't much reason to buy anything higher end than a 480/580 for 1080p. If you were looking to play 1440p at very high settings or 1080p 144Hz at very high settings, then sure a GTX 1070/1080 would be justifiable, but for 1080p60, a 480/580 is plenty.
