UPS or Surge Protector: NEED HELP D:

Never owned a desktop so I'm not familiar with this at all. Researching myself doesn't bring any clear answers so i'm looking for some nerds to help me out. I'm looking for the absolute cheapest, but most importantly, reliable thing that will protect my pc from a power outage and give me time to properly shutdown.

 

Or is it not even necessary..?

That would be a UPS and most have surge protection built in. I recommend APC, they have many different models ranging in prices. Honestly if you aren't doing anything critical that would cost hours or lots of money if your PC turned off just get a surge protected.

A surge protector will only protect against spikes in electricity and cannot prevent data loss or corruption from sudden power failure or mission critical work, the only option would be a UPS. What are your specs of the system we can provide a better estimate of what you need if you are looking at a UPS.

A UPS would be a better idea.

Surge protectors will only prevent your equipment from spikes in the electric current, but they shut down immediately after that.

UPS' on the other hand will protect your equipment and keep it on for a few minutes, just so you can finish your tasks and shut it off.

cpu: i5 6500

psu: Seasonis 520 Bronze

Storage: WD 1TB + SSD 120GB

RAM: 2x4GB Corsair Veng

If you have frequent power outage or poor quality power a UPS is ideal. The system has a fairly lower power draw it shouldn't use more than 350W under load so a UPS like this would be able to power everything and give enough overhead for peripherals and networking equipment:

Is that price necessary? Nothing critical, I would defiantly pay for it it's what I need, but I found another ups for 40$ that looks good enough. What do you think? What should I be looking for?

That would not be enough to power your system under load, it needs to be able to supply your max load your system will draw. If you don't experience a lot of power outages or fluctuation in power from the grid a surge protector can suffice but has it's draw backs.

 

This would be the very least I would suggest to go for in a UPS unit, as for a surge protector this would be a good option:

that ups wont be enough, assuming an 80% efficiency on the ups it will out put a maximum of .8*350va which is roughly 280 watts. good luck even gaming on that ups without it complaining or cutting out while power is still in the wall, and  if power goes while gaming the ups wont ever chip in to save your system. take it from me Ive had my run ins with cheap ups, had a 750 va that would cut out on a i7-2600 and a gtx 970

I have this one, can confirm it works really well as I've had a few power outages at work. At home I have a more advanced one since its on all the time so it has a built in software to shut the computer down if the battery drains. This "dumb" UPS though is all I need since the computer is only on when I'm using it!
