Mastodon, a decentralized open source social network! Could it maybe replace Twitter?

Mastodon cops the basic feel of Twitter, especially its professional app Tweetdeck. The interface is separated into columns that stream your notifications and the timeline of people you follow. There’s also an option to access a “local timeline” or “federated timeline,” which we’ll get to in just a second.

Mastodon is a free, open-source social network. A decentralized alternative to commercial platforms, it avoids the risks of a single company monopolizing your communication. - mastodon.social

Description:

Looks like an interesting node to node social network. You can start, or join an "instance" which is sort of like a group of nodes that interact. It's said to be similar to the social network, Twitter.

The sign-up page is currently locked, because apparently a large amount of people are trying to register.

Opinion:

I feel like this might actually be a good alternative to Twitter. I really like the idea of node to node instead of connecting to a central flag ship website server.

I agree, it seems to be getting a lot of attention so far though.

I doubt it'll make it that far. Seems like it's a little over the ability level of most common folk.

Oh weird, I was directed to choose another instance from a big list, but regardless of what instance you use you still connect to everyone.
