500/50 internet. Linux performs better than windows?

Go to solution Solved by bcguru9384,

also remember ubuntu does not run firewall or antivirus unless you install it yourself

windows does run both by default

I just recieved a 500/50 internet yesterday, and so far i've only been able to get 380/49 on average in windows with probably 20+ tests done in 24 hours.

However i just booted into Ubuntu on the same desktop and got 513/52.

Why is this? I have turned off any software on my pc i can think of that could affect the speed. however it is quite a lot isn't it?

Thanks :3

Probably windows updates eating some of the bandwidth.

Probs that or another application, i would open task manager and see idle networking activity, you probs should start your test when it inactive.

i would not expect to see such a difference. There may be something wrong with windows, maybe a win10 update is no longer working well with your NIC driver?

Windows fully up to date, nic drivers reinstalled yesterday.

I just booted into safe mode with networking and got this result: http://www.speedtest.net/result/6194818899

So i guess it's something interfering. but what hmm

I can't find anything that uses my internet in task manager. max ethernet usage on idle is 148 Kbps down and 24 or so Kbps up.

that is just the shittyness of Microsoft's license model. Only MS partners can request new features and even then its not going to be the same as open source. No one can independently audit it; I know the MSDN agreement expressly states you cannot benchmark Windows Server, but only the .net components with some strange restrictions

Excellent. I ran "netstat -b -n -t 3" and turned off everything i could = No result

I turned off windows firewall = no result

Then i turned off Avast = Full speed!

So i guess i will change antivirus then :) Thanks! Really weird for it to drown 100mbps tho o.O

EDIT: It is not consistent 500/50 as i went past in safe mode and Linux, but more like 480-490/50 which is close enough. Much better than 380/49 :)

thats price of security

Thanks. Also a note. With Avast, Steam download capped at 35MB/s and sometimes stopped for a second, also sometimes capped at 6-12MB/s

Without Antivirus i got 62MB/s constant.

With AVG which i just installed it seems to cap at 45MB/s with no dips or stops like Avast had.

Earlier i thought steam had a lower cap themselves.

I wonder which antivirus would actually be best in this regard.

Also i had no problems with my earlier 30/10 internet connection. No dips or caps anywhere. Just now that i got 500/50

Probably just had some traffic going on in the background of windows OS is all, unless someone else in your house was using the net at the same time?  I use ubuntu as main OS now, and run a VM of windows and even in the VM I get almost exactly the same speed tests as ubuntu host OS unless there are updates running in windows, so doubt that windows firewall had anything to do with it.

i would put avast on no realtime scanning and turn windefender on as realtime scanner

then you can always have avast run its weekly scan

see if that makes a difference

be neat if we can get linus do a video on how security apps effect perfomance as i see he doing a streamer video today but did they ever add the video stream thats being encoded to the security apps excemption list?

i bet no and as we see yes it can have a drastic effect

Would be interesting, i tested between a few. Avast, Kaspersky and Norton. Every time i uninstalled i got full speed if not a bit above but every time i installed one of theme the speed went down. and even though 400 down is good on speedtest.net which i currently get (Not consistently) with Kaspersky, my download speed on Steam i heavily affected. No antivirus = 60mb/s and with antivirus = 6-24mb/s

I have not fiddled much with the options but i might try some different things. Again, a full scale test between many antiviruses etc would be interesting indeed.

If you're still looking for one, use bitdefender free edition.

Their detection rates are topkek (even for the free one), it's extremely lightweight, and there's no notifications or anything, you won't even know it's running.

@bcguru9384 bingo see also any encryption protocols you run as they can slow it down too due to encryption and decryption depending. Windows indeed does ALOT automatically for security reasons while Linux only does what it is told.

Guess i can try Bitdefender again. I have used it in the past but left it out as it was so sensitive i felt like it was a baby sitter. And when stuff went down in false alarms i had trouble stopping Bitdefender from "Protecting" me. xD As said ill give it a try, downloading straight away. I liked 90% of what it offers back then so i don't have much to loose.

Thanks for the reminder :)

I've had no problems with false alarms. Then again, I don't go downloading random executables off the internet. Better safe than sorry, right? Especially with all the ransomware floating around on the internet.

True in some situations. I did download it but it lasted me 1-2 days. The second something comes up which it tells me is extremely dangerous and will blow up my PC it just instant deletes the file and i have nothing to say about it. argh.... You know the old Keygens, no-cd exe's or just pirated game cause i can't bother going up to my storage to get the disc's  or where the disc is damaged. (don't have a DVD drive anymore anyways).
Those sort of things are a huge pain in the ass with Bitdefender. And sometimes Avira aswell. But Bitdefender is the worst of them all.:/

..? I've heard of people having this problem, but I've always been able to un-quarrantine items.
