I'm new to computer building and I was wondering if any experienced people could check out my build. My budget is around $1200-1300 USD. I plan on playing fps games(probably not gonna stream or render videos) in 1080p with a solid 60-80 fps on ultra and on a 144hz monitor. Some questions I have form my build is, is this a efficient build for my budget and will my CPU and gpu bottleneck?

Why do people always neglect to consider looks >.<

Am I the only one who actually cares about ~aesthetic~?

Not trying to bash your list, still good otherwise.

Looks like a great build :) I have that monitor and can confirm it's great for the price.

My only change would be potentially going down to an i5 6500 (or 7500 for Kaby Lake) since you don't need the hyperthreading of the i7 for gaming. If you have the budget I guess go for it, but I don't think you'll see a huge performance gain.

you generally see a lot better 1% and .1% mins with a i7 vs an i5 so you will get smother gameplay especially in cpu haevy games like bf1 and gta 5

Nearly no difference, seems silly to drop $100 extra

that's with a gtx 970 which would run into a gpu bottleneck to be able to see the difference. the gtx 1070 is much more powerful. its more equivalent to the gtx 980ti.

I still don't really think it's worth $100

i would think it would be worth. it allows for more multitasking it will last longer than the i5 and it will have better 1% and .1% lows.

I guess I'm a bit biased as a student who doesn't have $100 to throw around for a few FPS gain :P

I'm a student too but i use my computer for alot of other things besides gaming and the extra cores help. hence why i have a r7 1700. if they were pairing it with a gtx 1060 or rx 480 i would agree that they don't really need the i7 but with the gtx 1070 it seems worth it. also you have to take into account the price of the whole build when looking at price to performance and when you do the i7 doesn't seem as bad of a deal anymore.

But will the 1070 and a i5 6500 bottleneck?

I would suggest getting the 2.5" version of the MX300 ssd, Crucial MX300 275GB 2.5" Solid State Drive. This will leave the M.2 slot free for an upgrade to a 4-lane NVMe M.2 drive.

Consider a better psu. SeaSonic 650W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply is a very solid choice.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Everything will "bottleneck" but I think it should be a good combo. If anything the 1070 might be a bit overkill for certain games at 1080p144hz; my GTX 970 does most games just fine at your target 60-80fps while also playing others at a solid 144fps. If you have the budget the 1070 will still be helpful though for fully maxing out your refresh rate. However, your CPU won't be huge on this factor so I don't see an i5 and 1070 as bad at all.

I'd change the SSD. I tried a 120gb and even with 2Tb other drive i run out of space quickly on it, and it would sick on such a solid build. 240 will be more than enough.

Redstone:
i7-4770 / Z97 / GTX 980 / Corsair 16GB  / H90 / 400C / Antec EDGE / Neutron GTX240 / Intel 240Gb / WD 2TB / BenQ XL24

Obsidian:

MSI GE60 2PE i7-4700HQ / 860M / 12GB / WE 1TB / m.Sata 256gb/Elagto USB HD Capture Card

Razer Deathadder Chroma / Razer Blackwidow TE Chroma / Kingston Cloud2's / Sennheiser 429 / Logitech Z333

I still only see it as $100 extra regardless of budget, and a few FPS more isn't great price to performance for me. Great combo for some, but for purely gaming it's just very extra to me.

I agree, you can probably fit a bigger SSD in for ~$20-40 more

it was more than a few frames depending on the game. if you aren't running into a cpu bottleneck the difference will be significant.

no it literally is a few frames, and game dependant isn't looking great ether as the current market is catering to Consoles and we get the ports. They are not developing games that need 8 threads or beyond as only the higher levels of the PCMR can play it, thats not a big enough market. GTA V runs just as well off a i5 asit does a i7 unless you doing crazy 4K mods but thats a whole nother issue in of itself. BF1 is one of the only ones and that been said its not like running it off a i5 gives you potato performance.

@cdsboy2000 is completely right here. $100 just isn't worth it for a few frames.

FACT: There WILL ALWAYS BE A BOTTLENECK in a system. Bottlenecks ain't these big bad monsters that make games unplayable. it just means some parts are faster than others. If you got a core2Duo and a 1080 thats a bottleneck that will affect you, but anything from the last 2 years CPU+GPU wise you are more than good enough unless you are a true Enthusiast in which case you would be OC'ing and all the rest.
