The main ones that i can think off are the Dead Space games.

While I never found them to be all that scary, it does have a creepy atmosphere and you are capable of fighting back.

A good classic game would be System Shock 2. Also extremely atmospheric.

Although, I will admit that games where you can actually fight the enemy never really scared me.

The problem with being able to fight back is it can break the illusion of horror if it's not implemented correctly. The original Resident Evil played this rather well. However something like The Last of Us doesn't. It's not scary if I have a mountain of ways to fight back and can fight back easily.

That said, there are some horror games I would recommend, but they're not on PC. Like the Siren or earlier Silent Hill series.

You can fight back, but you should only do so to stun an opponent.

The Evil Within is creepy as well with a story that never fully explains itself (which I loved about it). I would recommend playing on Normal if you're not used to 3PS.

I'm also questioning your requirement that you need to be able to fight back. I'd argue horror games are most effective if you can't at all and instead need to use your wits to evade the thing.

Nothing's scarier than feeling helpless.

I have played parts DreadOut and it didn't really do it for me.

It was way too unstable and non-immersive to have any effect on me.

I did enjoy the Fatal Frame-esque style they were going for, but yeah...

When you have the ability to fight back, then you lose the sense of helplessness and thereby you lose the sense of downright terror.

I would have recommended Dead by Daylight, but I don't think you can actually fight back in that game.

Which is a shame, since the concept is actually rather intersting.

I know right.. the atmosphere in dreadout is pretty intense..and the asian ghost is so scary as well.

I am stuck fighting those freakin cutter ghost since he can teleport here and there and always kicking my ass in the game..

The evil within it is..ohh i used to 3ps been finished dead space and lost planet series..thanks i'ill buy it later.

Well in the first 1-3 hours on the game i do like the helpless feeling but after getting into the game and those freak keep kicking my ass like hundred times.. thats when i get pissed and the helpless feelings turns into rage which sometimes making me to quit the game and never play it again..

Dont get me wrong here i do like the horror atmosphere and the feeling of helplessness.. but that said if something like that happen which is sucks sometimes it breaks the game imo its like i didnt get scared of them anymore just because of that and i will never get scared again till the rest of the game.

Which one isn't? Metro is very scary with the claustrophobic atmosphere that feels like it will choke you itself rather than let the monsters do it.

Legacy of Kain has quite a few parts that are tense since you can't see enemies and it doesn't allow you to just die and retry portions. Especially Soul Reaver and Melchiah's Lair (spiders, yuck).

Unstable as in it crashed at random times throughout my playthrough.

I probably got 2/3 through the game (which game in the series I'm not sure) before my savegame got corrupted and I never got back into playing it after that.

And as I said, the game didn't really do anything for me. Jump scares never really scared me (which is why I dislike most modern horror movies) and the atmosphere wasn't really immersive enough to suck me in.

But to each their own, I guess.

The Library in Metro 2033 still stands as one of the most tense segments I've ever played.

Metro by far is awesome! If you have PS, I'd definitely say Last of Us.

Deadspace series is phenomenal.

Resident Evil is great as well (but OP already has it.)

Dead by Daylight is also very fun.

I've heard Alien Isolation definitely is, but haven't played it yet.

And the Legacy of Kain series was intense and semi horror (more gothic) when I played them as a kid, but not quite as much as an adult.

I can also recommend Alien: Isolation, but I think OP wants to punch something and the Alien basically cuts you in half for most of the game.

Alien Isolation is an absolutely fantastic horror game, but it's definitely more of the "cat and mouse" type that the OP seems to be avoiding. The best you can really do is drive the alien off with a flamethrower for just long enough to dive under a table.

i played The Evil Within a few months ago and enjoyed it quite a lot.

atmosphere is good and the only problem i had was that on "normal" i was always out of ammo while on "easy" it was the opposite: too much ammo and thus no real challenge and not much tension. so deffinately do play on "normal"

also, anything resident evil except 5 and 6 - these are great co-op games but no horror atmosphere by any means. i recommend the HD remakes/remasters of 0 (zero) and 1, revelations 1 & 2 and maybe 4

if you happen to have a PS3, PS2 or gamecube or even a dreamcast you should also try "code veronica" - if you can handle the oldschool "tank controls" and outdated graphics.

speaking of outdated: try the silent hill series - i played 1 - 5 and liked them a lot.

most of the games are available for PC and they also released 2 and 3 as HD version for the xbox 360 and ps 3 if that helps you in any way

metro 2033 has some spooky parts and a great atmosphere overall but i would not classify it a "horror" game personally.
