Mercedes-Benz to Release Final Edition SLS AMG

gallery_04.jpg

Yup, it's time again. Time to add another car to the list of greats being killed off by those that brought them into reality. As understandable as it is, what with the modern ecosystem moving towards more environmentally-friendly designs, it's a shame to say goodbye to the SLS AMG. Though not originally a car I was that fond of at launch, the introduction of the Black Series really opened my eyes; Black Series cars from MB have always fascinated me, anywhere from the older SL65 Black to anything that even hinted at the Hammer's roots. The Germans know how to do crazy power without a doubt, believing that "you should be able to enjoy the car at any portion of it's rev range."

Now, the tag "Final Edition" seems to have differing meanings for different manufacturers. *cough Pagani *cough* But expect the last run of current-gen SLS models to have updated aesthetics and a slight bump in power. For a flagship car, it seemed to have a short lifespan (I think it's approx. 4 years) when compared to the previous flagship collab model, the McLaren-Mercedes SLR (life span of approx. 7 years). And that's the problem with these "halo" cars; in order to best represent a company and it's technologies, they have to go through so many refreshes, in such short spans of time. Nevertheless, I look forward to seeing what Mercedes-Benz brings out for the next gen halo car, especially after the recent advancements with their S-class and the announcement that they plan on reviving their prestigious inline 6-cylinder engines.

To be honest, despite the fact that they compete in two different price segments I hope MB follows a similar route that Nissan is doing with their halo car, the GTR. The upcoming R36 will feature tech from the brand's FIA-GT experience in addition to their R&D into EV powertrains; it wouldn't be surprising to see Mercedes-Benz do the same especially given their current FIA-endurance GT3 cars and endeavours in both F1 and DTM. Bah, guess we should cherish the SLS AMG while we still can. So far, I've only been able to spot two of these cars in the wild (in two different cities at that).

To sum up, the Mercedes-Bens SLS AMG has officially received a date of expiry. With it, the motoring is going to once again lose a car featuring the iconic 300SL-Gullwing doors and the infamous M159 engine (6.3L V8) built by AMG, pushing 583 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque.

How I love that car so. It is absolutely beautiful, elegant and exciting. The gullwing doors to some are ostentatious, but to me they are absolutely beautiful. Everything about it, down to the door handles and wheel nuts gets me going. It is sad to see it go, and I will miss you. Honestly, I am crying to an extent.
