This too me, look like the same, however the WD Caviar Blue is $50

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/MwW9TW/western-digital-internal-hard-drive-wd10ezex

while

the WD Black is $80?

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/Fz2kcf/western-digital-internal-hard-drive-wd1003fzex

They are both 1TB, with 7200rpm.

So what is the difference?

Should I just buy the Blue?

It's cheaper.

The Blacks have some more warranty on them (at least where I live), the Blue has two years and Black 5 years. Supposedly the Black drives are faster too, but make some more noise.

The Black is faster.

How much faster? When I had a Blue and a Black in the same PC, I only noticed the speed difference if I was working with files on one, then switched to working on the other. Even then, it wasn't huge.

What I did notice is that the Black drive ran a bit hotter and a lot louder. IMO, not worth it. If a WD Blue drive isn't fast enough for you, you need an SSD, not a marginally faster HDD.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

I have an SSD for my Windows Boot up and for Particular Games. But yeah thanks for the feedback! I was hearing Blue was better online as well. It's good to know you have had actual experience with it.

Iv done a speed test using Samsung Magician software(Not sure how realible results are) and compared black to a seagate barricuda and they literally were the same

I would imagine it's a little faster, but at some point, there's only so fast that you can make a 7200RPM hard drive without bringing a NAND partition to the party...and that kind of ends the "HDD" category, doesn't it?

Yup, the extra 20-30 bucks aint worth the extra noise

it may be more for server side stuff, where the noise isn't as important as being speedy and reliable, ya know?

That's basically what WD Reds are for, though. WD Black drives are marketed for performance applications.

The Black drives are louder, hotter and slightly faster. The Blue drives are designed for everyday use (and for me, that means 24/7 operation of a 1TB Blue I bought). I would NOT recommend the Black, unless you know what you are doing and really need it. I have plenty of Blues, none of which have any issues.

Main System: Phobos

i guess, I don't really deal with WD, I've dealt with them before and they've left a bad taste in my mouth.

WD, Seagate and Hitachi all make solid drives these days. Even Toshiba's not bad. As long as you're buying a new drive with a good warranty from a reputable OEM, you're probably fine.

Oh, "solid drives". I see. Nope, did not mean "solid state drives" there.

What kind of a hard disk needs a driver? You mean the controller?
