Processor Graphics while Dedicated Card Installed

Hi.

 

Question: does the processor graphics do anything at all when there is a dedicated graphics card is installed? or is it basically switched off?

Usually it does absolutely nothing, but for some things like Intel QuickSync it can be put to use.

it depends on your specific configuration, but essentially it doesnt do any graphical calculation.

(although, i heard that the CPU cores "outsource" some computations to some elements of the iGPU. unsure wether that's true or not.)

 

all in all, these are the options:

- igpu is disabled, it does nothing

- igpu is enabled but no displays are plugged into it, it can be used for quicksync or similar technologies

- igpu is enabled and has displays plugged into it, same as before, but also relieves the main GPU from the (completely neglible) workload of *driving* the display. if you have displays that are super iffy, that under strage cases may lock up your GPU, this is a huge help with troubleshooting stuff

the integrated graphics only outputs through the motherboard I/O video nothing else.

My dream is a locked i7 flagship that comes with extra 1 or 2 cores in the place of the iGPU.

how does it work with switchable graphics ? For example my Precisions all have MXM GPU's, however i still think that the iGPU is pushing frames to the laptop's panel. As almost all hardware reporting software seems to report that the MXM card exists, yet isn't actually driving the panel. Am i right in thinking that a fullscreen 3D application like a game will be treated the same ? or does the MXM GPU actually take hold of the panel ?

I don't bother with overclocking CPUs any more since intel increased the costs to for no good reason, the unlocked one could be that way too all the better I just wish so was the locked on as you can see in my signature Its just how I build my builts, when I feel like the 7700 no longer enough I'll probably just buy again the cheapest motherboard possible from asus and place the current locked i7 on it hehe

but.. you could just buy an unlocked chip and not OC it?

 

for the i7's the difference in price between the non-k's and the k's has been pretty much 1:1 with the difference with out the box clock speed.

Truth to the lucky Us citizens, here in Brazil Importation taxes makes a solid 100 dollars gap between the two ;x

Then we both know the struggle to be tech enthusiastic in countries with laws living in the past century yet when comes to technology incentivize haha... I just wish to finish college soon so I get a nice paying job and budget no longer is a mattering factor for my future builds, at least I give no care to cars or cloths, and I can live with my dad so soon enough I should be able to build dream PCs hehe, then I might reconsider and go full OC-able build.

I think most systems automatically switch it off if a PCIe graphics card is detected, assuming everything is left at default.

 

It can be re-enabled in the BIOS, though. I have my HD 530 graphics running one of my three monitors (the other two are plugged in to my GTX 1070), and I use it for Quick Sync encoding once in a while.
