What's the story behind your current rig?

Barfnargle

So tell me, why do you have the parts you have right now?

Personally, I never intended for myself to have the parts I have. After being over generous and giving away about all of the parts I had purchased to finally have a nice rig, I was left with nothing. Somehow I've ended up with this oddball (in my sig). It's not a screamer, it's really not much of anything, but it'll get me by for a bit.

I have a laptop that sucks because I'm broke.

What I have learned is never be generous with things you bought for your self, you bought them for a reason, not to give to someone.  But I am sure you know that already :P.  My rig story is boring, just one I built.  Specs are in my sig.

A trip down to Microcenter with $1000 in my wallet.

If I had the knowledge I had today, I would have done a lot of things differently.

I should have went W8, 8gb of ram, less expensive cooler, less expensive mobo and I probably could have gotten a 680.

I had a Compaq desktop from 2007 and got a new PSU in May 2012 and case in June 2012 that my dad bought.  In July I randomly bought 4GB of ram and my pc kinda broke and I had $170 so I bought an i3-2120 for $110 and cheap mobo for $50 and reused the HDD and optical drive.  January 2013 I had some money ($140) so I bought a GTX 650ti for $135 on sale.  Last week of March 2013 the Fractal Core 1000 was on sale for $20 and I replaced my Zalman Z11.  I was not satisfied with my Core 1000 and bought a Fractal R4 for $100 in June 2013.

Specs: i7 3930K / 32GB Dominator Platinum / 240GB Force GT / GTX 580.

Sold of two of my 580's after having tons of problems with SLI. Other than that I've been in between builds because of lack of time, hence the somewhat odd specs. New build coming though, I'm selling off my LGA2011 setup to build a small form factor build from scratch, as I finally have some time on my hands.

I asked for a i5 3570k and ASRock Extreme4 for Christmas one year along with 8GB of Kingston HyperX Blu Red RAM and a 1TB HDD with 1 120GB SSD. An NZXT Crafted Series Original Phantom (Black/Green). ETc.

Then things slowly grew from there. Gotta love having a large family when you are 16 and no job.

Now I'm adding to it every other month. An R9 290X here. Another 1TB there. 32GB of RAM here. etc etc.

This Christmas, I'm getting an IKEA desk because the one I use kinda sucks. And I vehemently desire to stand while I do such things. Not only because my family has a history of heart problems (which this will every so slightly fight), but because standing is just my preferred position for using a computer (so long as it is at the correct heighth and whatnot).

It will have adjustable legs, so if I ever need to sit, I can.

Ultimately, this is what I plan for the case.

Water cooling will happen when it happens.

Got a Dell out of necessity, needed a new gpu which also meant a new power supply, motherboard didn't agree with power supply, got new motherboard, did not fit in Dell, got Phantom 410. And PNY ram for the hell of it, they look nice but don't match. Plus the mo' gigs the better.

Got into the mechwarrior online closed beta after the devs sent an email to me by mistake. Tried to play it on my 2,2ghz compaq prebuilt computer. Promptly ordered parts for a new rig since i was only getting 3 fps with the prebuilt. Only regret is not getting an ssd :)

My case comes back from the first pc I built for myself, by myself. The rest of my build I gradually upgraded over the years as I got money and felt like upgrading, I didn't really need to upgrade from my old 560 to the 660 Ti back then, but my little bro needed something better than the GTS 450 (still a great card and in a friend of mines rig now) So I upgraded myself to help him upgrade. I could have built myself a second pc by now but decided to upgrade my little brother to an i5 3570k and 8 gigs of ram (from a celeron G530 with 4 gigs of ram) to fit his GTX 560 and he's never been happier. He games at 1440 x 900 so it's quite nice for him.

I was like, hmm My laptop actually sucks, what can I do?! O.o OOOO I remember my mate Alex, nice guy btw, has built his own ballin' gaming system perhaps I shall do a cheap version of that! So I asked him about it and he said oh my Dad built it with me so I Know how to build it but not what makes it so awesome, here is your old pal Justin he has ALSO built his own PC so I was like YAY I'll ask him, then basically he sent me this 2 page essay about what makes parts good etc. etc. and I just kind looked up parts and stuff from Newegg, thought hmmm these seem ok, according to Justin's instructions and being cheap! I will go for it. So I did, but btw I have great plans for the future of this build ;)

cough cough, NZXT Prodigy M with an SSD, a sound card and not the stock cooler... Probs going for Noctua there :)

btw look in my sig for my build. Not the best thing in the world but still works like a charm ;)

PROFILEYEAH

What do people even put in these things?

Wanted a gaming computer, went into computer store, saw this laptop, "oooooh 1GB dedicated graphics!", brought it, later realised that I was a terrible person.

I learnt:

1. Don't rush a purchase. Take your time, think about it and do some reasearch.

2. Don't ever buy a laptop with gaming in mind.

3. Read the specifications carefully.

CPU: Intel Core i5 2450M @ 2.5Ghz RAM: 8GB GPU: HD Radeon 7470M (Potato) Mobo: No idea, probably a pumpkin.

My computer is a laptop.

My current rig was built at the end of 2011, p67 sabertooth, hd 6950, 2500k. I have a nhc-14 with nzxt fans now (noctua's bearings went and used to shake my raven 3) that are tied onto the noctua cooler with the string from a disney tote bag and zip ties, one of the blades broke off of the top nzxt fan so I broke the opposite one and put on a resistor to keep it from vibrating. I used to have a raven 3 case, but I changed it with a white define R4 for a quieter case which I painted the front with black chalk board paint.
