No SteamOS might actually make it perform worse depending on the dev. As for dual booting just partition a piece of the hard drive for it. Install it in that and if it asks install Grub so you can choose windows or linux at start without going into the BIOS

You can dual boot. Install windows first, then linux.

 

Id stay away from steamOS and just use ubuntu. Its the same thing, but you also have a good desktop destion enviroment.

 

Performance is normally worse in linux, but depends on your hardware.

Please, please don't use SteamOS.

 

If you really need linux, go get yourself debian/ubuntu and just install steam from there.

 

Normal dual-booting procedures should work fine.
