Turn on a lamp via software?

Amazon Alexa can plug into power outlet appliances and such, and turn them on and off. How is this done, and can I do this with my computer (perhaps through a USB port or a wireless protocol)? I have a lamp on my desk right next to my PC and it would be cool if I could keybind a function key to toggle it's luminescence. Thank you!

Arduino dude. But actually, Alexa can connect to smart lights/smart sockets and turn them on or off. You'd be able to do it if you put like a Phillips Hue bulb in the lamp.

id wire the lamp through an arduino nano with a bluetooth shield on it and then write a program to turn the power on and off - voila!

They already have wifi bulbs.

But yeah, the Alexa doesn't "plug in" to any lighting. It communicates via Wifi to the Phillips Hue Hub system which then communicates to the lamps/bulbs/lights etc.

Arduino is your best bet unless you want to drop over $200 just to get started.

You got a light bulb to power your light bulb and a wifi bulb to talk to the arduino that powers the rgb on the lightbulb. with your lightbulb.
