Upgrade to 6 cores or stick with just 4?

Hello all, I currently have an i7 4770k OCed at 4.4Ghz. I use my PC not just for gaming, but for video editing and other Adobe software required stuff. I was wondering if upgrading to either a better 4 cored CPU (7700k) or switching to a 6 cored CPU (6800k or 6850k) would help with my performance? Also, I hear that there are some other intel CPU(s) coming out this year? If so, what are they and should I get them when they release?

GPU: GTX 780 (upgrading to 1080 ti upon release)

RAM: 16gb 1866 (upgrading to 32gb later)

2x 21" monitors (upgrading 1 to 27" with 2k & g-sync)

Thank you guys!

I saw that floating around everywhere. Those are the new AMD processors coming out right? I might check them out, but I'm more of an Intel fanboy myself. So I was hoping to still with them.

Thanks, man. Is it just AMD releasing new processors, or is Intel gonna try and compete with their own releases?

Be sure Intel will respond, but it depends on the Ryzen's performance. If, and only if, the Ryzen will perform as advertised, Intel will respond with a good alternative. It will be a bit more expensive, but Intel will throw a 'new' feature that will help you with.. something.. If not, then Intel will keep going on with their line-up. Keep in mind that this is only my opinion on the Ryzen hype and Intel response topic. Have a great day!

Haha. You've kinda answered the question for the Ryzen vs Intel hype. If you like Intel more than you like AMD, and you think that the Ryzen will be not that good as it is advertised, then sure, upgrade to a 6-core. To my knowledge, the Adobe suite is very hungry for multi-core workloads, which will help you in the long run if you upgrade to a 6-core. Also, you may want to look for cheap, second-hand, Intel Xeon processor. You can find good deals for 8-core processor, as well as 12-core ones.

Even though I use a 4460 and I believe (as do most people) that AMD has not been competitive in many years, I really hate Intel. I want Ryzen to succeed even though I probably won't get it. If AMD fails this time, it is likely that the CPU market will become a complete monopoly so Intel can drive their prices even higher than now. Also Intel barely improved anything from Sandy Bridge to now. Skylake and Kaby Lake IPC is about the same, and Haswell is about 9/10 the performance of Kaby Lake even though it is from 4 years ago. I think that I am done my Intel rant. P.S. I am planning to OC my non-k CPU with my H97 motherboard just to spite Intel. (yes it is possible)
