Dual Zeons

I have wanted to have a dual cpu rig for a while and wanted to get 2 six core ivy bridge 2011 xeons on a asrock mobo.

I have also wanted to start cheap with only one cpu and then go dual.

has any one here built a dual cpu rig.

The only reason to have a dual cpu rig is for heavy "workstation" applications or for folding (there is much better folding cpu's then six core xeons).

If you want to start off cheap your better off going with an amd multi cpu set up.

Afaik, you cannot run a dual-socket motherboard with a single CPU.

I have a dual-CPU machine somewhere though; it's ancient. Don't even know what socket it is, but there's two xeons in it.

I do some video editing on my machine and could get the mobo for 400 and the cpus start at 200

If your budget is that massive for only a gaming PC. you could go with a 4670k or a 4770k if its for only gaming. But if you have no problem to spend all that massive budget money on a PC you could even go for a x79 a 4930k for example.

 

But if you do Heavy editing/rendering/3D modelling and you do no gaming at all i would recommend you the Xeons.

A single cpu and a decent gpu for acceleration would be plenty.
