3D Software Computer Build

Manolis

Hi all. I hope you are having a good day.

My name is Manolis and I am PhD student studying cardiovascular disease in the UK. Our department is finally putting in the funds to purchase the software Imaris, a powerful 3D software (super expensive), very useful for research. My supervisor is in charge of purchasing a computer strong enough to support this software and she asked me if I had any suggestions. I built my gaming PC last year but I am thinking that a different kind of computer is needed for this. Any ideas on what kind of components would make a significant difference in the performance of the software? Lots of people are going to be using this and benefiting from the software.

Thank you guys in advance.

Note: Budget from funding can reach 2500 british pounds but spending less is preferred.

you will need a 6 or 8 core, and a 1080, just think OP gaming machine and you have what you need for CAD, pretty much also more RAM the better, to a point. Wait for Ryzen though before you build it, just incase they offer good performance

he should ask the people who made the software, they usually have a "we recommend this kind of system" they can give you to start from.

Multiple cores and threads

http://www.bitplane.com/systemrequirements.aspx

High End System

  • Windows 8.1 x64 / Windows 10 x64
  • RAM: 64 GB or much more
  • 3.4 GHz CPUs (Intel) total 8 core
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon
    RX 480 8.0 GB
  • Multiple PCIe SSDs
  • Monitor: single 1280 x 1024 pixels up to dual 1920 x 1200
  • Mouse: 3 button wheel

You're looking at the X99 platform and probably something like a 6900K, doesnt look like a GTX1080 is necessary though (Makes sense to me, most of these programs rely on CPU, not GPU, I''m a CAD techniciam so I would know)

i'm debating wether to ask you how much experience you have with this specific piece of software, or to ask how far up your ass you needed to reach to pull that advice out.

for all they say on their website the multithreaded optimization may tank down the drain after 4 cores, and seeing they have OSX on their list of supported hardware i wouldnt be surprised if they dont expect more than an R9 something in terms of graphics.

The 10 series (and 9 series in fact) is not listed as supported, and even the older generations seems to also show poor ratings within the software. I'd go RX480, and then use a PCiE SSD, faster access to data adn all that. I imagine they have a data center to store information as well so they might need as much on board storage (just my own experience, I could be wrong)

probably far from ideal, but i havent slept in something like 20 hours so this will have to do :D

quick run trough specs:

- i7 6800k, i dont think more would be ideal within budget

- slapped a noctua on there, she'll be right

- some asus board that didnt look overly gamer-y, GOD is the mobo market getting stale and filled with terrible crap..

- i'm "starting you out" with 64GB ram, with the option of maxing out the cpu's supported 128GB

- pcie SSD for OS and "the work files"

- 2x 3TB spinning rust, put these in raid 1 trough the mobo for mass storage

- RX480 8GB, i dont think you'll be needing more than this :D

- fractal design define R5, both because i'm a fanboy, and because they're a pleasure to work in while staying extremely "hello i fit in an office" on the outside.

- corsair RMx 750w, more of the #GoodEnough variant

- windows 10 pro, because you shouldnt be buying these keys off reddit.
