Cat5 compatble with cat6?

Can you use a coupler with cat5 and a cat6 cable conjoining them two? Or at least manually solder the different colored wires together?

Both CAT5 and CAT6 use 8P8C connectors.

One of the differences between CAT5 and CAT6 is the wire/shielding size so if you use CAT5 in a CAT6 connector or vice versa then you might not get a good connection.
