thinking about purchasing an i7

okay, i recently upgraded my GPU to a gtx 1060 6gb and i think im some games my cpu may be bottlenecking the gpu so i was thinking about upgrading to an i5 or i7, im thinking about going for an i7 over the i5 but im not sure if its worth it, i mostly play games and i do programming for college and ill be doing animation and 3d modelling soon when i get round to creating a game.

so i have the budget to buy an i5 or i7 but would it actually be worthwhile to go for the i5 over the i7 or vice versa.

drop your opinions down below please guys :)

what platform are we talking? what chipset? what socket?

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

The only real difference between an i5 and i7 is hyperthreading and slightly higher clockspeeds.

An i7 in your use-case would really only benefit in the 3d modeling...

I mean if you have the money go for the i7 for sure! otherwise i'd personally save $100 and get an i5 7600k. :)

Honestly you could probably get away with on of the more recent i5s if you overclocked it a bit, but if you want some more future proof go i7. I would also look a cinema bench scores to get a better idea on how your games would run with 3d rendering and all. Also good luck with college.

According to his profile:

  • CPU
    AMD FX 6300
  • Motherboard
    Asus M5A97 LE R2.0

So it'd be a whole system. upgrade.

yah that would have to be motherboard and CPU swap at the least, RAM could be kept if he sticks with 5th get or earlier from Intel

unfortunately, there's also a crap ton of games where it literally makes no difference what so ever.

that said, if the budget is there an i7 is defenately nice to have, just the speed bonus when extracting huge zip archives did it for me :P

These are your options. You can opt out for 6th gen processors as well. Also the Ram is your choice. If your just gaming then I suggest a i5nk or i5k (i5nk basically a non overclockable processor, that's my own work for short.)

Funny thing, Crysis 3 is 3,5 years old now. And the level "welcome to the jungle" still maims i5's today :)

yeah the first watch dogs was a pain too...witcher 3...gta5...there are many games that run quite a bit better on an i7...now yes the OP has a GTX 1060 for now and it maybe won't make that much of a difference...but he is probably buying a platform for years to come...like 3 to 5 years and the i7-7700 will last him that long...and will support his future graphics card upgrades without limiting his performance in demanding games...so even if ''he's just gaming'' he will benefit from it down the road that's a given...unless he upgrade every year or something...i don't know...i wouldn't get an i5 this late in the game.

@i_build_nanosuits @Dawson Wehage

2800MHz DDR4 RAM is the cheapest on PCPP right now? o_O

Free performance, why not? :P

3200MHz RAM can make a 6600K perform considerably faster in CPU bound programs like unzipping files or rendering when compared to a 6600K paired with 2133/2400MHz RAM so why wouldn't 400MHz make a little bit of difference...

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

i7 for sure. It will improve render times and also real time/playback footage fps for your animation stuff.

i5 is still big improvement over your FX-6300 in both gaming and work but i7 will provide much more power for work loads.

im pretty much a beginner in both programming(c#) and animation ( better at programming though) and im picking it up pretty fast, going more towards the i7 now just for that extra power in productivity and gaming
