970 SLI vram question

Go to solution Solved by Ashiella,

That looks like rainbow six siege! You have two cards working on the same load right? Cause it's sli, their working together, and due to the fact that transferring gigabytes of data in between one to the other would drop performance the textures and stuff is loaded into both of the graphics cards. Thus you only have 4Gb.

It's only 4 (or 3.5) SLI doesn't add VRAM together, each card uses its own

If 2 4 cylinder cars were parked right next to each other, you still have 4 cylinders.

But if you took two 4 cylinder cars, took the engine out of one of them and put it in just 1 car and manage to link up everything... profit?

In a multi-GPU setup, the most common (because it's the least problem causing) method of sharing the workload is alternate frame rendering. For this to work though, both GPUs need the same data. So even though you have 8GB total, since both cards need the same data, it's really only 4GB of VRAM that can used.
