Worth buying a m.2?

I Have  intel 6700k and a asus h170 pro gaming motherboard with a m.2 slot and i got 2 old gpus for now wich are 2 r9 270x but the cpu has 16 pci lanes ands the motherboard has a m.2 slot will it be un ideal to buy a m.2 card cause of pci bandwith?

Unless you put an NVME SSD into it, it shouldn't matter. if you really want to spend the extra money on an NVME SSD, feel free. IIRC the h170 has 16 PCI-e 3.0 lanes (althouth the DMI to the CPU is lower bandwith, but whatever.

It would make more sense for a Mini-ITX builds where there is less room in the case for drives and such. Helps on cable management then.

Just invest the money on a larger sata 3 ssd, you will get better cost to performance.

My plan was to buy a small m.2 drive just to boot off of and run some applications so it was gonna be under 128 gigs

Don't use M.2 for SATA. The performance and price is the same but it locks out some SATA ports from use.

 

If you'd like NVMe (for boot and open-world games), get a 960 EVO or 600p.

H170 and Z170 can support up to 6 SATA ports, for a typical user I don't think RAID and multi storage would be needed, hell even 4 SATA ports should be enough, leaving you around 3 ports for drives, one SSD, one HDD and the rest for either a not needed optical drive or extra drive

there shouldn't be a problem in bandwith.

It's a waste to get an NVMe drive unless it's about the same cost as a SATA one. It has almost zero effect on your system speed.

Open-world games like GTAV, Skyrim, and Witcher have lower latency and texture cycling with NVMe thanks to those small files/textures being able to be sent in one massive queue vs 32 at a time.

The gpus would operate properly right if i have a m.2 they wouldnt have enough lanes needed to run?

Does that give a framerate increase during gameplay, or just during load times?

It can if your GPU is a lower tier, i.e. a 1050 would do better, but a 1080 would probably just load faster. 

 

Loading does better for those games that load via tiles (draw distance isn't always a loaded world) like Skyrim.

If you're using SATA, no.

If you're using NVMe, the drive usually uses the DMI, but may use the CPU if there are lanes available.

so if it where in its slot and the Gpu are occupying  8x lanes each it wont use a lane or will?

All PCIe devices use lanes. Your CPU has X lanes, usually for the GPUs, and the DMI has another X lanes, for anything else.

What are your specs?

You're fine. The motherboard and the DMI will take care of the M.2 if you choose NVMe.
